Does anyone know what the difference is between the 4X, 8X, and 12X CD-R discs? I don't have a CD-R drive yet, but there is a deal at Staples for PNY 12X CD-R 50pack spindle for $19.95 after rebate (pretty darn cheap, right?) and I am tempted to buy it. I am just confused about the whole compatibility issue. Whoo, I need sleep.

Wow... that is extremely cheap.

The only difference is that they can be recorded at different speeds. For example, an 8x CD-R can be recorded at up to 8x, but not over that. That is my understanding of it at least.

Thats basically correct (what Smokey said). It's just that the ?x speed is the "rated burning speed" Just like a celeron cpu. it may be rated for 366 but it might be able to run even higher but it's quality checked to make sure it will run at 366...

Short answer. Faster is better http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I like those Staples deals... if they're in stock. I'm going to have to check it out after work. Those PNY are a different brand than Precision right? How much is the rebate for?

I think the Staples rebate is for $15, but Best Buy has the same price running, but their rebate is $20, so you may actually be able to get the whole deal for $5 less than mentioned above http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
