Ok, this is getting freakin' ridiculous.
2 weeks ago, I bought a savage 4 32 meg PCI, and finally after 2 weeks of tinkering, I decided to return it and get a different card. I just couldn't get it to work.

I replaced it with a Voodoo 3 2000 16 meg PCI tonight, thinking that everything would be ok after this. Boy was I wrong.

The card won't display anything over 640x480x16 colors, and when I start windows, it says that there is a problem with the display adapter.

Jeez, I don't even know where to start. I've read just about every bit of info from this BBS, the 3DFX website and the website for my motherboard manufacturer, Amptron. Here's a list of things that I did:

1. Installed the latest drivers for the card
2. Flashed my system BIOS to the latest version
3. Removed all video cards from the system,
finding a few in safe mode that were invisible in the normal mode.
4. Installed, removed and reinstalled the card about 4 times
5. In the BIOS settings, I Assigned an IRQ to the video card, disabled palette snoop and disabled video cache and shadowing

My System consists of:
Motherboard: Amptron P2 3300v
CPU: P2-333
Mem: 64 meg SDRAM

I've tried 3 times in the past few months to upgrade my video card, each time a failure. I guess I'm kinda hard headed, but I'm thinking that maybe the card just won't work with the motherboard, simple as that. I really don't want to re-install windows 98, but I think that it might fix the problem.

One more thing, when I checked all my system components in the control panel, I noticed that several of them were installed more than once...including the video card. Still can't figure this one out....

Clean out any old drivers you have.
example: Change it to "standard display type"
then restart windows
once in windows:and if you are any good editing the registry:go in and delete anything that you have just installed for the new card.(do at your own risk). If you are unsure do not attempt to try it.
Run: MSCONFIG: uncheck anything to do with any of the cards you had in the system.
restart:Install new drivers and go from there. Usually works for me. Also another suggestion:
Good PCI card and probably cheaper:Velocity 4400 16 meg TNT PCI<<<awsome card>>>AGP even better. Run about 45 bucks.

Thanks for the reply, sweeper. Shortly after I submitted this post, I decided to shell out more money and just bring the system to a professional. Hopefully I won't get raped on the labor costs /forum/smile.gif

I had the same problem when I tried to upgrade the driver for my Banshee. I somehow got a corrupt driver and when I tried to reinstall, I got the same error. You have to go to Find- Files or Folders and get everything that has the same name as your driver. Delete it all and then reinstall. It's really simple after you find the problem but EXTREMELY frustrating until you do. Good luck with the tech.

I had to wipe my whole system in order to get things to run under the same conditions. Sometimes it is very hard to get all of the driver files out.
