I must warn people and ask for help. Today, I clocked my Voodoo3 3000 AGP from 166Mhz to 175Mhz and it was completely unstable. Windows crashed after 2 hours of idle time. I had no problems at 166Mhz other than some games slowed down. 170Mhz was faster, but still very stable. I would very much like to get my V3 up to 175Mhz and past, but I really need help and suggestions on cooling. Here is my current system configuration:
A-Open Full Tower ATX
AMD K6-2 475Mhz (5 x 95Mhz)
ASUS P5A Motherboard (rev. 1007)
128MB PC/100 (Micron)
Quantum Fireball CR 13GB
Voodoo3 3000 AGP (currently back down to 166)
Sound Blaster Live! Value
GVC 56K v.90 Modem
Hollywood Plus DVD Decoder
Linksys EtherFast 10/100 Ethernet Card
I would really appreciate any and all help I can get. My CPU temp is currently 46C and my MB temp is 28C. Please give me all suggestions you can think of. Thanks.

I have a small pentium pro heatsink/fan. Would it work???

If your 1st PCI slot is free it should fit,(don't go past bottom of heatsink with fan or it will not fit back in AGP slot).
REMINDER: Doing this will void your warranty!!! I had to pinch a few of my V3 heatsink fins together (very gently) in order for the fan screws to thread in. You might want to use some other technique in housing the fan, (glue, vinyl screws, etc).

Keep me posted

If you take an EVEN OLDER 486 fan and screw it on the default sink, it wont do as much, but doesnt void your warranty. but since I had a Pentium fan/sink laying around, i pryed off thay default sink (scared me at first...loud POP) then used some thermal grease and stuck on my pentium HSF. Id suggest you get some thermal tape or frag tape instead, since mine dont really stick well at all, and the default tape on the pentium fan wasnt made for hanging upsidedown nor without the ZIF clip http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

This is a comparason of the different Cooling methods of the TNT2 Thanks to www.hardocp.com (http://www.hardocp.com) . The GlobalWin CPU cooler is the closest to a normal Pentium Fan/sink. The only one better is the massive GlobalWin S370 CPM32, which bumps out 2 PCI Slots (not really worth it). If u dont wanna waste any slots, Tennmax got the crown..check it out

I put an old pentium heatsink fan directly on the V3's sink,it takes up a PCI slot & voids my warranty but it has been running stable at 180mhz for 2 weeks. I have a friend who mounted a case fan beside his V3 and has his clocked stable at 185mhz. So you definitely need some type of fan either on the heatsink itself or ontop/beside.

Good Luck!

I run my V3 3000 at 195 Mhz... very stable...
I use double bearing fan made by mitsubishi..
Also they're stable at 200 Mhz.

I have a V3,3000 and i have it running a 192mhz. The first thing i did is i took the heatsink off the card and removed the double sided sticky tape and but themal paste. That alone should help you some but if you need more try adding a fan on top of you heatsink and maybe even a case fan. I have a got 2 heatsink on my V3 one on each side and a fan on one, and it is cool to the touch. Even at 192mhz, could get more but why push it with frame rates like these i have no need to. Even before i overcloced the card it smoked my TNT2 card.
P.S.
Gary Peterson has a great and easy program for overclocking any V3 card check it out at 3DFX site. GOOD LUCK
