Continuing discussion about TNT2 vs. Voodoo 3: Does anyone know what is a proportion of games that is coming out or just came out that only support Glide? Is 3DFX itself moving away from it and goes towards heavy OpenGL support in their cards?
I have this dilemma since I need to buy a good video card for my game machine and have a huge problem for settling on a video card.

The only future one I hear of that is Glide only is Diablo II.

Oh Boy, if Diablo II stays Glide Only... I think I am going on a shooting spree... or break down and buy a Voodoo2 for $20...

Its not a FPS, so i dont even think youll need that many frames. Itll probably also stick u at one resolutionlike 640x480 or somthing and youll be able to run it pretty well on a wrapper. Also, I might be totally wrong and need major correction.
I think the only way Glide could have a future is if 3dfx let everybody else use it.

Closed standards always seem to die in the end. IBM's MCA, MacOS (ok, its not dead, yet.), and a few others come to mind. Glide's only hope would be to open up completely. With the lead Direct3D and OpenGL have now, it would be tough to break it out of the tailspin into obscurity though. Take a look at Quake 3. See any Glide support mentioned in there?

Tribes is great and all, but the newest patch made OpenGL very playable. And Tribes 2 ain't gonna need no stinkin' Glide!
What would letting other companies use Glide succeed in? 3dfx would lose their hold on that one API, and no one would really want it anyways since all Glide is is a continuing coverup for 3dfx's lack of true OpenGL support...
Quake 3 with a Voodoo, now that was a laugh. My friend had just bought a V3 when the test came out, and he had the use the wonderful "still beta" OpenGL, and he was about to kill me when he saw how much nicer my TNT2 was playing the game...

With PIII 450 What would be faster: TNT2 Ultra or Voodoo3? I terms of FPS? In term of number of effects?

How about the greatest game of all - Tribes? That thing is Glide only and some very crappy OpenGL support...
Rainbow Six follow up Rogue Spear is, I believe, a Glide/D3D affair.
Go here for a beta review: http://www.combatsim.com/htm/july99/rogue-pre1.htm
I think there are one or two people looking forward to this.
Yeah, what moto and 800XL said. Glide needs to licensed out to survive as a viable product. Which is a shame considering I just bought a V3 3000 http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif

I dont get this whole API thing. Tell me...Is there a reason i should choose OpenGL over D3D when i play a game? or vice versa? I always upt for OpenGL when availiable like a dumb animal. Is the visual detail different? are the FPS i get different?

depends on your card auraedge...if you have a tnt or tnt2, your dierect3d framreates are going to be higher...but if you have a v3 then your framreate may be higher in opengl or glide

Glide can still be around even if its not all by itself. Is direct3d all by itself, no its competing with opengl and glide and the same with opengl. glide is getting outdated yea, but it is still a very good gaming api. Unreal tournament is going to be supporting glide, I read on voodooextreme.com that the people who are developing unreal tournament are using only Voodoo3's because the glide is so much easier to use and program with then any other api, plus it just plain runs the game better. Unreal has always had a problem with good direct3d and opengl support, and diablo2 is supposed to support glide as of now, and maybe direct3d(i think) when it comes out. It may not be proprietary anymore but it will still be around for quite a while, and be used a long with other api's. If I have a choice of which to use I choose glide over direct3d because of the speed it gives and the quality with it.

Glide is the best jockey (API) on the slowest donkey (Voodoo 3).
OpenGL and Direct3D are a Summo wresler on Phar Lap* (TNT2) in the Melbourne Cup.(long race)
