This computer building stuff is a real ***** the first time....I've gotten everything on my system working:
all drives installed
all cards in-place
windows 98 installed & running

I thought it was time to lay back and enjoy my new toy...I was wrong.

I have two majorly annoying problems

1. my 3d blaster banshee is obviously in place correctly because I have video. But when I attempt to load from the cd it says that my card is not detected and to try again when it is in place??? How would they expect me to read that notice if my vga wasnt in place?

2. No sound. Here is my setup:

pc-dvd cd audio cable >>> mpeg2 card audio in1 >>>>>>> from mpeg2 audio out to asound soundcard . Here is where I am having MAJOR confusion.dio out cable from the mpeg2 decoder has 2 ends (MPC & JST). My sound card has 2 inputs of reltive size (lggr & grgl). When I try any compination of connections to the sound card (both, justmpc, justjst) I get nothing. But THIS IS THE WEIRD ****, when I connect the system speaker cable to the lggr on the soundcard and the jst connector also to the sound card (leaving the mpc hanging) I get super duper low sound?? Uncontrollable by volume controls but still audible. I'm really going nuts on this set-up. God overclocking it to 464 was the easy part of my setup.....Any genius' out there understand what I'm doing ****ed up? please help me before I jump of my roof.thanks

By the way here are some other outcomes I've gotten:
1.a constant beeping sound when both jpc and mpc connectors are in place with system speaker connected to the motherboard.

2.The beep is load as hell

3.I've tryed bypassinfg the mpeg2 card resulting in no sound.

4.Why wont it notice my graphics card...Im going intopa deep, solemn, state of depression.

5.I caused a spark on my mother board by connecting the audio cable directly from the dvd-rom to the system speaker input on my motherboad...dum as ****, I know, but was it a reral bad thing?

WEll, the beep is not a good thing. Sounds like your pc is telling you there is something wrong with the setup. I have heard this myself.
As for the mpeg2 problem, and the VIDEO card not being detected. Software problem sounds like. As I have had the same problem before as well. I had alot of problems installing my MPACT DVD decoder card. It was telling me everytime I installed from the cd that there was a problem with my video adapter and or it was missing. I eventually found a patch for that problem. AS for the audio , the basic setup should be:
DVD AUDIO OUT TO AUDIO IN ON MPEG2 CARD
AUDIO OUT ON MPEG2 CARD TO SOUND CARD "CD" INPUT / NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH AUX INPUT.
BASICALLY THE SAME FOR THE SERIAL CABLE VMI OUT TO 26 PIN CONNECTOR ON VIDEO CARD.
GOOD LUCK.

Set your clock speed to factory specs BEFORE you attempt an OS installation! Verify your sys integrity at factory specs before you try to tweak it. Your periphs might not work with out of spec bus speeds. You'll never know if it's bad hardware or your config that's causing the prob if you never established a working baseline.

The lggr & grgl and different phyical connectors for the same input originating from dual standards in the early days of CD-ROMs. You should only normally use one (l=left, g=ground, r=right, the fact that the g wires will probably be black may be of some help to you).

By connecting you PC speaker and the CD/DVD at the same time you are effectively connecting the line-out of your CD to the Speaker directly and hence low volume sound with no control. Nothing wierd about that.

My only suggestion is to start from scratch again.

That is: no MPEG card, then check sound is working normally (can play win98 sounds, and play music CDs).

Then add MPEG card and repeat.

Hopefully this will help you to narrow it down.

Not sure about the graphics card, but MadMax's suggestion seems good.
