I have an older (6-7 years) Packard Bell 15" monitor who's screen gets a red tint to it intermitently (but it's becoming more often). The fix is to slap it on the side. Obviously something loose inside, but without the schematic, my electronic trained father-in-law is at a loss. Does anybody have an idea where/how to start? Is there any chance the schematic can be found on the net somewhere?

You can probably get by without a schematic because this is a VERY typical problem. I known a couple people that have had their monitors do this exact same thing plus I've seen the problems dozens of times on message boards.

I'd advise asking in a newsgroup geared towards this subject. Maybe comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware.video
or others video/monitor related.
Also there is some good info here:
