There are a couple of chat things that let you talk to anyone on the same page... I've used Excite Chat for this purpose, just arrange to meet with a friend on a web page...
it has voice support too...

The ICQ active list that we have set up is another good way to talk in real time you can also see who is online. The List is down at the moment due the upgrade to dual celeron's but hopefully it will be up and running soon software is rather buggy on the server side though so please be patient
