I am wondering if it is possible to set my display properties to 16kb instead of 256. When I click the list all it shows are 16 color and 256 color. Is it my monitor?

486 DX2, standard 640x480 VGA

Also, is there a way to check what kind of vidio card I have, so I can check for an updated driver?

The color depth depends on your video card and its driver.

If you bought the monitor at the time you got the 486, even if it's a 15", it should even be able to run at a higher resolution than at which you chose. At the least 640x480 or 800x600. I suspect the video card can also run at a deeper color depth. Such as 32,000+ colors. It takes about a half a megabyte of video memory to to this.

If this is all true about your hardware, the fix is to install/use the videocard's drivers instead of the standard VGA driver.
