I disabled the old ATI according to Compaq's directions and installed the V3. I pluged the monitor into the card, started up the PC and the screen was blank. Compaq said that it had something to do with an IRQ. What is an IRQ and how do I change it?

interrupt request.right click on my computer, select properties, device mgr, display adapters, then double click on listed v3 card.then select resource tab and select manual assignment.then select an irq that is not in use.to view unused irq just click on the first heading in device mgr(computer)and select the interrpt request radio button and look to see which ones are free.Irq's are 0-15 you should have some available.

You don't understand...I can't even access Windows 98 with the V3 installed. I can't get the monitor to display an image.

how did you disable the onboard card?is it a jumper?what slot are you putting the v3 in?have you tryed different slots?is this an agp card that was disabled? If so make sure to turn off all agp settings in bios. You can also assign irq's in your bios check to see if irq assignment is set to auto or manual. If this is an agp on board try leaving it enabled, install the v3 and boot the system using the onboard video.then see if windows can recognize the v3 and if it will set up.This is win98 correct? If so you should have no problems doing this.If the vid card sets up,then try seeing if you can get a display from it.

Re-enable the onboard video leaving the V3 in place. This will get back the screen. If the system doesn't boot with the standard VGA drivers, change to the Standard VGA driver thru Display Properties' Settings/Advanced/Adapter/Change. Select to aList and select Show All. Reboot after it get installed.

Now cross check the IRQ's on the both cards to determine which IRQ the V3 was assigned and the take note of the onboard one in case you need to use it. After removing the onboard controller from device manager, do as Envy states and try an available IRQ.
Shut down the system.
Follow Compaq's instructions to disable the onboard video with jumper settings if need be.
Then power up.
