AMD have recently announced this on their website:

On Monday, AMD is announcing it has commenced shipments of 1GHz AMD Athlon™ processors.

Leading PC manufacturers will also make announcements on the availability of systems based on the 1GHz AMD Athlon processor. The first commercially available systems based on the 1GHz AMD Athlon processor will be available beginning Monday.

Who here is going to be first? It certainly won't be me. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif

I guess you are having one of those bumps tonight, changing servers. Can't get into the forums. I can get everywhere else though.

not me, but Rom, hurry up and open your site, I'm getting withdrawal symptoms here http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Sorry the Romulus 2 site is down at present, folks. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif

I am not a happy bunny right now. The old host closed the account BEFORE they released the DNS. Hence nothing for the URL - not even a temporary sign.

Everything should be fine when they finally do get around to releasing the DNS. Please bear with me.

Wow..the 800 mhz was cut 21% last week, but a full ghz! Can we all say "Bragging Rights"? http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Read somewhere that it was going to be primarily only Compaq and Gateway that had them in March, and that they would become available in other pipelines in April.

Checked out the Gateway site, and they are selling a system (pretty loaded, ie: DDR Gforce, etc) for approx. $3100.

I'm going to wait for the Thunderbird to come out, `cause I think that 1/3 cache divider is just bad. But full speed cache?!? WOW!!!

Ahhh, now I can relax (a bit) and think about CPUs again. The Romulus 2 site is back up on the new host. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/biggrin.gif

SO just get an athlon 700 change the cache divider to 1/3 and bump the core voltage up from 1.6 to 1.8
and bam you have an athlon 1Ghz(this is basically what AMD did)

I find it actually not that exciting because of the very slow speed of the L2 cache.

Not me! I'm going for a BP6 or a .18micron 550 Athlon.

I suppose that to some extent it's the sheer kudos of being able to say "I've got a 1GHz CPU". I'm sure AMD will improve the performance by the time they release 1.2 or 1.3GHz Athlons.

AMD is by far the best cpu for the money. The 1GHz is going to lead them far over intel. I'm not to sure if intel is going to be able to catch up... lol

You mean like this?

Funny how Intel was supposed to realease it this fall in limited production and now they are goung ahead and realeaseing it much sooner.

Take a look at the review over at Sharky's. The limited cache is a sticking point:

Yea,I would rather have a pIII 600 and OC it to 900ish.

The cheap L2 cache they use is a big reason for the low athln prices.

Intel groggily crawls to its feet from the mat and goes for the quick uppercut...

Is anyone else (not) sick of hearing Intel is "releasing" chips that they can't deliver for retail until months later?

Well at least Intel is not trying to pull off a bunch of publicity *BS* If you read the above link by Toadman (and thanks for the link by the way.) you will see that all AMD simply has done is upped the voltage and dropped the L2 cache speed to 333 (1/3 divider instead of 1/2) This is not the "HEARLDED" Thunderbird core being promised by AMD. What it looks like to me is that AMD is simply telling people here is your 1 gig processor. (an 850 processor overclocked) So that they look good in the public eyes.

The above is simply how things look to me and my impression of what this looks like.

This release just shows that AMD is really just trying to beat intel to the punch, rather then releaseing a rock solid contender...........I am sure intel's 1000Mhz
will lay quite a smackdown to the athlon 1000Mhz............its funny,AMD is doing what alot of staunch AMD supporters accuse intel for doing all the time............
releasing a halfbaked product so everyone will go WOW.

At the very least they could have used some better L2......its not like it isnt availiable or anything,I am sure it is more $$$ manufactur, but IMO the L2 cache speed of the athlon 1000 is much less then an ideal release.
I remember seeing a review of the athlon 750,when they dropped the L2 down to 2/5,saying that the 700 was often as fast,or faster then the 750 was.

Fabulous - so we can process our brains out -

there isn't a system bus or I/O chip set out there worthy of that processor speed until you get into server class systems......

You'd almost need an internal fiber channel to keep going at that level....

We now can make mistakes soooooooo much faster than we ever could before...... The endless loops will run that much faster through the process stack......

My next system will have a slot 1 celeron in it - probably in the 600mHz range - plenty fast for strategy games and the few drivers I grab from the internet.....

Thing is, that new CPU still can't process information as fast as one human brain cell - OKAY Okay, so some brain cells are better than others - I mean healthy ones...... http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

chew on that a bit......
