Monitor adjustments

What is the best way to get the brightness and contrast right.I have heard from youre monitor screen should be pitch black.Any suggestions.

Colorific comes bundled with the Creative Labs Banshee and has a 'static stick' template which is put on the monitor glass and helps to get the best colour, brightness and contrast adjustment - I can't tell the difference!
I think you should just look to get a balance between deep blacks and the clearest whites possible by trial and error.
