A vendor advertises a retail box Athlon 1.4 as "In Stock Now. 3 yrs warranty w/AYHJA 3rd line Y direct from AMD, AMD Premier Partner Include AMD Heatsink Fan." Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought I read somewhere that you could not really tell if a chip is AYHJA when the heatsink fan is attached.

The markings are on the top of the chip.
You do have to take the HS/fan off to see.

I have a "boxed retail" T-bird 1.133/266
It came w/o the fan mounted but inside the box inside a big transparent plastic "tray"
like clam shell thingy, the cpu's markings were clearly visible once the box is opened but not yet removed from the plastic "tray"
btw the "stock" fan was a dead ringer for a volcano2 (like they were cut from the same mold) and this was all inside the sealed & shrink wrapped retail box.

MrLuigi, I am looking at a volcano and the hs that came with my retail 1.2, and there are differences. The fan on the stock hs is a 15mm, on the volcano, 25mm. The volcano has a slightly taller hs also.

Hmmm interesting. I purchased my retail CPU about 4 months ago. I also went out and bought a Volcano 2 expecting a more substantial HS and when I compared the two I was amazed at what I thought were exact same HS...yes the fan is a bigger 25mm on the Volcano2 but I was speaking of the HS only...might be that you HS is either newer or older...anyway when I saw the two side by side I decided to go out and buy a all copper Gladiator with the 60mm delta (only to find the same all copper HS being sold elsewhere for 1/2 the price...) errrr I hate when that happens.

Most AMD retail chips ship with a Taisol cooler. The speed grade determines the actual size, but I've found it to be a decent heatsink when modified with a Delta Black 60mm fan.
As for myself, I running at 1.35 GHz with a standard SuperORB. Polished the bottom smooth and used RadioShack thermal gel. My average maximum full-load operationg temps are around 50C with good case cooling.
