I have just built a new AMD 1.4Ghz system (after languishing in Pentium II hell for WAY too long), and obviously am a bit new to all this heavy duty heatsink business.
My question is i installed all the components, applied Artic Silver to the CPU and placed the Heatsink fan on, and then went about installing the OS. After doing all this I looked at the temperature in the bios and it read: 73 degrees!!!
From the looks of other postings this is WAY too high..
any ideas????
I have the Athlon 1.4Ghz (not overclocked).
ThermoEngine V60-4210
Gigabyte GA-7DXR
ATI Radeon 64Mb DDR
This is hot, but it's also 1.4GHz CPU almost pushed to it's architecture limits http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif
I couldn't find info about your HS/F, be sure you're using 7K RPM fan, or check any WaterCooling/Peltier solutions.
Also, software coolers as CPUCool or VCOOL might help reducing the temp by 10-15C.

Yuo did'nt say whether that was farenheit or celcius. But you can't beat a quality heatsink and fan. I run a copper Gladiater with a 7000 rpm delta on that same CPU. It's a little loud but at least I can't hear the wife an kids!!

I highly doubt it was running at 73F

I would rather have it at 73F than I would 73C... I mean 35C is like 60-80F (I'm not sure, some were in between those i think.) 73C I'd think would equal a dead CPU..
Unfortunately it IS running at 73c - the system board is running at 45c.
The ThermoEngine has a 4000rpm fan (it is a quiet version, there is also the delta fan version - but sound is an issue).

There are a couple of things that may be wrong. Before I get to that, 1.4GHz is not the architecture limits on an Athlon... anyway, I would suggest, first, remove all Arctic Silver from the CPU and heatsink. Make sure both surfaces are completely clean and then reapply the Arctic Silver - you may have too much or too litle, not trying to insult your intelligence at all, but it is possible, check out http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_silver_instructions.htm for what the company says you should do for amounts and how to apply it.
There is no doubt that your CPU is running hot, the motherboard is also a little high... is the case closed? Do you have adequate airflow thru the case if it is? I know these seem like basic questions but sometimes it is the most basic that is overlooked.
Also, software coolers WILL NOT do you any good if you are using Windows 98, Windows ME, or Windows 2000 - all of these operating systems have the halt command implimented and that is all the software does.
