I'm ready to buy a thunderbird cpu. What fan should I use on it? Where to get it? i also am getting an Enlight7237 case with 300W power supply and a fan included and installed. Do I need another fan? If so, which one and where to get it? thanks

That case doesn't have a space in the back for another fan. however, the front mount fan is big enough to put two back to back to increase the in-flow. Not sure about the T-bird. Is that a socket-A? like the duron? If so, I got the golden orb for my duron and one for my Athlon. I like them very much.

The 7237 has a mount for a case (back) fan. I have one. T-Bird is SocketA and the Golden Orb is a good CPU fan BTW

Golden orb, isnt that about the same as the super orb. I was told that these orb fans were to blame for many damaged chips.

Yes, if you are not careful in buying and installing, the GOrb can kill an Athlon faster than you can say 'Doh!'. I use a Super Orb on my Athlon, but would not recommend it because I had to modify mine to get mine going. There are many GlobalWins or others out there to work well. Be SURE that if you get a 266MHz fsb processor, that you get the HIGHEST rated fan for it. I have seen 3 1.2GHz 266MHz fsb cpus fry in the last 2 weeks because of using fans rated for processors below 1.4GHz. Spend the extra $$ for the fan and be happy when it works well. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Moved to CPUs and Overclocking

What about swiftech's MCX370, I've heard great things about this fan?

Orbs also WORK good. I have one that keeps my P3 933MHz cpu, which is OC'd to 1050 at 32 idle. That's a far cry from 47, wouldn't you say? I run a dual CPU system however, and that one is on my #2 CPU. My #1 CPU has a HSF very similar to the Orb, but it's an Antec, and it's usually about 3 degrees warmer, but still, at 35 OC'd, that's not too bad, huh?

Here's my orb fan by the way in case you were wondering what it looks like: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?sku=T925-1002
Yes, it's the Thermaltake brand, but it's still an Orb.

No, my case doesn't have any special water cooling, no, I didn't add any holes to the side of the case, yes, all side panels are on. In short, I didn't do anything in particular to help keep the case cool, other than add an exhaust fan to fan hole in the back that was already there.

So, you can set your Orb on your desk to look at if you like, but I'll use mine, thank you very much.

conjh13, Athlons consume more power compared to P3 hence, produce a lot of heat. Besides, the core on athlons are relatively more fragile and break/crack very easily.
Yes, it's the Thermaltake brand, but it's still an Orb.

Last I heard orbs were made by thermaltake!

www.thermaltake.com (http://www.thermaltake.com)

Orb coolers do a sufficient job of cooling duron/athlons, but the problem with them is the possibility of rocking the heat sink while mounting on or off the cpu. Besides, it is not recommended to use a shim with some orbs because the heat sink may not make full contact with cpu core. Now if you were taking about their newest orb "Dragon orb", that is a fine hsf (though a little noisy for my taste).

camaro, take a look at following thread where I have posted couple of links to online vendors which sell good quality heat sinks at very low price.

orbs look good, so put one on your desk and look at it. To cool your cpu, the Thermaltake Volcano 2 keeps my 1.4 @ 47 on even the hottest days. I have good case cooling that keeps the case at room temp. The clip does not take a lot of work to get on, and they cost ten dollars. Spending more, unless you are going to overclock A LOT, is not necessary.

con, Camaro did mention that he was talking about a Tbird, and my remarks about orbs related to AMD processors, and I think are still accurate. Your intel temps prove my point.....they are only acceptable temps and clearly the orbs would not cut it on the hotter AMD. My cpu temp right now, as I am surfing and working, is 29.......that's not too bad, huh?.....oh that's your line!
