Been thinking about upgrading my 'puter to a
PIII.I have a PII266/128-66 sdram,RivaTnt 16 Agp,19"Adi6p,Wd 3.2 UMDA Hd.My question is,just how much"faster"would a PIII be?A half second?1 second?I'm guessing the difference isn't that much,and perhaps I should wait for the 1 gigahertz CPU's.(Did I
answer my own question?).....DawgTuff

I guess you did. What applications are you running now?

My OS is W95B,I mainly use the 'puter for photo and map scanning and enhancing. The games are the most Cpu intensive(Wing Commander Prophecy/Secret Ops,
Independance War,Forsaken,etc.)

My 4MHz Z-80 is blindlingly quick, but that's because a 64Kb environment requires writing efficient code. - 8-Ball

My P-II @ 527 definitely lets me get around much faster than my other one @ 300 ... fewer coffee breaks though. - Elf

Since you have a p2-266 I assume you dont have a 100Mhz capable bx board. If you did I would suggest that you get a p2-400 if you need speed now. Pentium3 at this moment is a waste of money. Perhaps next year when the coppermine or k7 are out, a p3-500 or 550 would make sense for existing bx owners and only.
Your motherboard, if upgraded to the latest bios should support celerons up to 433Mhz.
It is cheap, flies in games, and still performs much better than your p2-266 in any application, not to mention you could probably overclock it a bit for little if any extra cost. I think it is the best bet.
If your need to upgrade is not that great though, you should wait another year fot the newer chips to come out, and change both cpu and m/b.
I really dont think your computer is not able to satisfy you until the end of this year.

I am running a P3 500 at 515 now. I was running a Cel300a at 464. And a P2-350 at 434.

I can tell you there is an immenseley noticeable difference in the P2/Cel and P3.

My Q2 crusher demo went from 24.4fps with the Cel464 to 49fps with the V2.

My open windows on my desktop can be dragged aroundmuch smoother with the P3 than with the Cel or P2.

Everyday I notice more and more performance differences. I can run over 20 windowed media player avi's at the same time with no slowdowns. This is not very possible with the Cel464.

Yea! There is a lot of differences! The only bad thing is that I can't keep the P3 because the cpu's from a pre-release demo from HP and I have to send it back for analysis.

If I buy another cpu, it will be a P3!

Hey there dawgtuff,

Is this question in any way related to your new ADI 6P 19" monitor in which BTW I'm curious to know how you like it ?????

I have tha same qustion you have with my PII-300. My plan is to upgrade to a BX board with 4x AGP,700MHz, and ATA/66 support and hang on to my 300 until maybe next year.

How about telling me how you like the ADI 6P. Don't worry about misguiding me. THANKS.

8-Ball..What's a Z-80?You pullin' my leg,boy!
NK4...Good advice,appreciate it.
BBA....ditto.
Pushrod...No,my Adi 6p had nothin' to do with my question. For the money and warranty,I think it's the best.My search narrowed down to the Sony GDM400PS(too expensive, lousy warranty, but the best picture),and the IIyama Visionmaster Pro450(equal picture, but more expensive)and the Adi6p(great warranty, very good picture, and after it wears out it will double as a boat anchor!..It's big).

Well, from what ya'll say,it looks like I'll have to at least double my CPU speed, and get another mobo.I'll probably wait a few months or more for the prices to come down.

One more question,I've heard my RivaTNT works faster with a PII350 or better than my PII266...is this true?

dawgtuff - The Zilog Z-80 was an improved competitor to the 8080 from a little company called Intel. There are still a bazillion of 'em in gadgets worldwide. They ran a slick OS from Digital Research called CP/M for "Control Program/Micro" (as in Microcomputer).

IBM could have gone with DR to develop PC-DOS but instead decided to support an upstart called MicroSoft. The new OS was modeled after CP/M, using the same commands and adding some new ones to take advantage of Intel's 8086. The rest is history. - 8-Ball

Nicely done, old person. Too bad you were emotionally involved in CP/M and didn't have the sense to buy MicroSoft stock. Oh well. - Elf

All right, all ready!!!Let's get back on track!....Can someone answer my question about the RivaTnt???

BBA

OK, yes the TNT will be faster with a 350 than a 266. So will a V3 or V2. Or a S3 for that matter.

Thanks,BBA!I guess I'll keep the TNT whenever I upgrade, course there's bigger and faster cards now.Ooooohhhh, changes, changes, changes! This roller coaster has no end.

Wait for the celerons to run at 1gh+, buy one, the equivelent to todays BX6 R2, and some new ram, what ever the satandard is (I think it will be like PC155/166 and like 3ns, but I do not know the future)

Dawgtuff, but he/they did contribute, you asked what a Z-80 was, he/they answered you....... And how can we contribute if your going to answer your own questions in your first post?. Either way, i think the Celery is the way to go, get a PPGA 433 or so, get the slotket, and go crunch some numbers in the cracking contest!
