Critical note: Try to avoid using root as much as possible, especially when you're new to linux. You could create lots of security hazards and other damage by using root all the time. Make a seperate account for yourself for day-to-day use.
I couldnt find any other forums for UNIX so, I hope i'll get a response from this site.
I'm new at the world of LINUS. I have just installed Redhat 5.0 from cd. (Went to hell and came back a bit shaky!). Anyhow, once loog in with the root/passwd and start up the Xwindow, all shell windows pops up but i can't use it. I 've clik in several time or open other session but I cannot make use of it. What is that i need to do in order to use those shell windows in Xwindows. Please reply to do_g@hotmail.com
Thanks

Hi, Thanks for the advice. I will create a specific account. Meanwhile i still can't use those shell in Xwindows? Is there a file missing or should i re-install the whole thing again. Also I was not able to upgrade to 5.2 because those 5.2 files are on my DOS partition. How do i go about to upgraded. Thanks again.
George.
HI, its me again.
I got a partition problem in Windows95. My 6g drive is partitioned into 3g and the rest of 500mg partition. Everything went fine as I dedicated a drive to copy files from D: to J: drive. Suddenly, without any apparent reason, I couldn’t do it. I get this error saying "it cannot copy or created directory" when i try to copy a file OR save a file on the J: partition. I did scan/defrag, reboot. I even remove the files i had their to another drive and format J:. I recopy all those files back and the problem remains. Even in DOS mode i get the same error. Anyone would have an idea why this happen and how to solve it? Please post it here or email to: do_g@hotmail.com .
PS i did run the recent mcafee antivirus and there's no virus on my system and drive.
Thanks a million.

Problem - "it cannot copy or created directory". If youve loaded that partition with files in root of drive (not in folders) you will get this
error.

btw, what vid card do you have? 5.0 won't support newer chipsets without upgrades. check "http://www.redhat.com/corp/support/errata/index.html" for upgrades for X, or better yet, try and get a copy of RHL 6.0 or 5.2, which might support your vid card. You may have to "hand-hack" your video timings if you have a generic monitor, try here for info "http://metalab.unc.edu/LDP/HOWTO/XFree86-Video-Timings-HOWTO.html"
