IE 5, for some reason had become really slow and also I was unable to access Window's Update in Win 98. Unistalled IE5 went back to
IE 4 downloaded 4.01 update( Windows Update started working after deletion) and now all is fine. This is a mystery to me. Does anyone have a clue ???? Since I primarily use Netscape 4.7, the loss was a gradual effect until IE 5 no longer worked. Any insight to this grately appreciated.

well you're far from being the only one to have these problems. a lot of the time if it can be something really lame like corrupted cookies or browser cache and the best way to fix it is to drop to a DOS prompt and issue DELTREE C:\WINDOWS\HISTORY, DELTREE C:\WINDOWS\TEMPOR~1, and DELTREE C:\WINDOWS\COOKIES and then restart windows. other times files within your C:\Windows Update Setup Files can become corrupted and this is a pretty simple fix that I posted for Prism and it resolved that issue:
Go into MY COMPUTER and find the C:\Program Files\WindowsUpdate folder. Within this folder, locate the file 'wuhistv3.log' and click on it once. Then click on EDIT, then INVERT SELECTION and then DELETE to delete all files within this directory _EXCEPT_ the wuhistv3.log file. After this you should have no problem.
but as for WHY it happens ... your guess is as good as mine!

Hey Psyklone: You wouldn't believe...Also in Norton information.. my benchmarks ( for what this is worth) has increased about 25% and the response of the overall performance of applications have vastly improved. What did I
do. Something in the IE 5 must have been causing a loss of system resources ????
Any way , my computer seems to have gotten a
new breath or air and I love it !!!!! If it ain't broke , don't fix it. Thanks for the come back http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

well i have no idea really why the IE5 would be so much bulkier ... very interesting. really the only thing i can think of is the way that IE is so integrated into the WIN98 shell, if the IE program is having a problem, which yours obviously was, i could see a possibility for system performance degradation. as a result of that if it were uninstalled and you went back to version 4 which works fine, then you'd definitely notice an increase in system performance.
that's about the best i can come up with! *L* but i'm glad to hear you're running better now!

I even got so bold to bump up graphics accel
setting and went back to 16 bit color to see if IE5 was affecting my restarting problems. May have fixed alot more than I thought!!!
Only time will tell...every restart seems to open a new world !!
Dealing with a computer is like making love.
Sometimes it starts out fine but something happens and it's over. Other times things don't go so smoothly at the beginning but end up better than you had expected. And lastly, sometimes things don't start at all, crash and burn. Then you wind up at Sysotp's with a long face and a sad story http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif
All's well that end's well!! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Doesn't this disable all necessary username and password information for every site you visit??
Thanks

You can set IE 5 to automatically delete the internet cache files when the browser closes. I install IE 5.x with no problems on new builds at work all day long.

Tim: do you mean about unistalling IE5. I already had IE 4 on my machine so I didn't lose theses items. I use Netscape primarily
since it's integrated with my ISP's software
and is much faster than IE. Is that what you
meant???? http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Well, I guess I was mainly thinking of a way to get rid of all the thousands of cookie files for IE and still maintain the ones I want. I'm sure that all these cookie files can explain some of IE5's wierd behavior. I could never use Netscape on any of the computers I've owned due to constant crashes, and I've found IE5 to be much faster anyway. I worked with Netscape some, but could not devote the rest of my life to making Netscape work with everything else.... like my computer. ;-)
It's just such a hassle to go through a thousand or so cookies and manually delete the ones I don't want. Is there anything that works really well for controlling cookies? And is this yet another program to have running in the system tray?
Thanks
Tim
