ok I have a computer that just gets me by, i am intrested in over clocking and cpu cooling but i have a 166 mega hertz old cpu. It isn't even a pentium. just to give you an idea I have 32mgs of ram 1.19 gig hard drive with less than 250 megs free (but I run on a network so disk space really isn't a problem) ,ok well I guess thats it thank you for your time and check out my web site at http://freeweb.pdq.net/callaway/jeff

JC.... check out the overclocking information in the Guides section here at Sysopt. It covers some of the basic information you will need to get started with overclocking.
Give that a read, and then come back with specific questions you may have to increase your understanding. Also, next time around, specify what CPU you have (AMD, Cyrix, Intel) so that we can better answer any questions you may have.

Seems like you are very low on dough. Well I am in a same condition. Have a socket7 system myself. The best option is to add an AMD K6-2 processor and your system could hit 400/450/500. It should be cheap. You will need a little info. Try this: http://www6.tomshardware.com/howto/01q1/010212/index.html
- Deals with upgrading old systems. I don't think that your system is that old though. A little info on your system would help ie - CPU (Brand), Motherboard etc

you said i should say what kind of cpu i have well it a Cyrix.
OK. If it recongnizes a Cyrix it should reconize an AMD K6. You can get a cheap K6-2+ for $35 at Tigerdirect. Just use a prog like CTU to clock it.
That'll take you a million miles from where you are.

I'm not sure if that processor is a MMX cpu or not.
If not, it won't run a modern CPU.
Look on the mobo for a jumper labeled VRE, this is for using both older non-MMX and newer MMX CPU's.
Or look up the processor on the mfg's site and see if it's a dual voltage core processor.
Here's a link to the suggestion by Target, I agree that's a good place to start..

Whoa... before you plug in that K6-2+, you better make sure the motherboard voltage regulators support 2.0V!
jc052685, check to see what is the minimum voltage your motherboard supports. If it only goes down to 3.3V, then you're options are limited. The fastest chips you can put in it is either a pentium (non-MMX) 200MHz or a winchip 2-240. Both are hard to find.
If it only goes down to 2.8V, then your options are a bit better. You can put a PentiumMMX 233 and also the cyrix 6x86mx and some of the K6 series of CPUs.
If it goes down to 2.2V, then you're in good shape. You can put a K6-2 series CPU in it. And if it goes down to 2.0V, then you can put the mac daddy of socket 7 CPUs in there, the K6-2+ and K6-3+
I'll bet your cyrix isn't really running at 166MHz. cyrix "cheats" when it comes to the MHz label. The P166+ really runs at only 133MHz. I had a P150+ that actually runs at 120MHz.
The motherboard that was running my P150+ 4 years ago is now running a K6-2 450 thanks to the VRM module that I built:
