With the spring storm season just around the corner, it seems like a good time to share this info.

Last year I checked into my homeowners insurance limits on computer equipment. Found that the policy only covered $3000.
Also found out that additional coverage was DIRT CHEAP.

$25.00 annual for $8000 additional.
Replacement cost coverage of all equipment, comp., printers, monitors, etc. The works.
Theft, vandalism, storm and lightning damage, etc.

And yes, I did tell them that I'm a hobbyist with several machines which come & go. Didn't make any difference.

May never need it, but worth the price for peace of mind.

Hope this is useful to someone!!!

Great info as most computer users and hobbyist never check this out. With many companies, there is a cap limit on computers, so know what it is. Thanks for dropping this tidbit, since that reminds I need to check and see how much my current company will insure.

Yeah, especially for those who are natural-disaster prone.

flood...
earthquake....
hurricanes...
tornadoes....
theft.....
volcanoe eruption...
lightning....

negligence???
Don't know if they'll cover that.

plucky,

There is no negligence coverage... but between the earthquake, tornado, and lightning, somehow your chip got overclocked and fried your entire system. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gifj/k http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

BTW This is meant as a joke. I am in NO way condoning this kind/or any kind of insurance fraud...hence the http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif followed by a j/k followed by another http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Another insurance trick to watch for is that you are covered for CDs, tapes, LPs, CDROMs, DVDROMs, VHS tapes, books or any other media that you can build up a large and expensive collection of.

Many policies insist the you take out a "collection" policy for this stuff, as if you had a valuable stamp collection. Just think of the cost of replacing your games or music.... for me it would run into thousands, and I also have 400+ books that I really wouldn't want to have to replace, many are out of print.
