Hi,

I wonder if anyone can help me. I own a seagate 8.4 gig hard drive, which up 'til yesterday was working fine. I booted up my PC today (PII 333) and Windows crashed on the bootup screen (just before Windows 98 was about to come on), I reloaded in safe mode and was greeted with and error in comctl32.dll, I clicked OK but I was left with a blank screen (no explorer, desktop etc.)

I tried a scandisk, but when checking 'directory structure' it stalls on 8% and the hard drive makes a clicking sound. This also happens after 20% of a surface scan.

I realise this is probably a bad sector of the hard drive, but as windows cannot load I install any Norton Utilities-type program. I am restricted to the command prompt in dos, and when a DIR commands is performed in Windows/System there is a media error when it reaches comctl32.dll. I cannot delete or rename this file.

I realise this is probably a task for 'format c:' but is there anyway I can get around this (my last backup was about a month ago), and would I be able to format over this error?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

Rich
