Howdy all,

I found out I can upgrade 4 of my older computers at work to AMD K6-2 400s for AMD K6 233 MHz CPUs. Well I also have a bunch of old Micron Lxa Intel Pentim 200 (non-MMX) machines that can accept these old AMD K6 233 MHz CPUs. Is the MMX and extra 33 MHz work the effort and will it compensate for the AMD K6's lesser FPU power? Opinions, information and experience appreciated.

I'm not too sure about the performance of the k6 vs. the pentium, but I have a suggesestion. Why don't you try overclocking each of the chips and see which one gives you the highest speed. If you're lucky, you may have a "god chip". I guess you'll have to try running SANDRA on the k6 and pentium to see which one is better. Here's a link to Sandra 2001 v7.5 (ftp://zdftp.zdnet.com/pub/private/sWlIB/utilities/hardware_utilities/sandra.zip) . It's great because it lest you choose the systems to compare with.

The CPU benchmark done by Sandra, isn't really "accurate" to real-performance. I would say depends on what you really use, for just ordinary applications, the K6-233 maybe faster, but either way you wouldn't really get a lot more performance out of it. If you play games on that machine (I doubt that most games would even be playable - the newer ones) then it may be wiser to stick with the MMX, and save the effort of changing the CPU. Really up to your choice..
