Maybee go to a lawyer next, clearly your drive does not comply with regulations for class 3 lazer devices.

I install and splice fiber-optic cable for a living and the first thing you learn is NEVER look into a laser. I realize this was an accident and I hope you've gotten to a doctor and had that looked at. It sounds like it was just for a second but thats all it takes. I'm not sure how strong a class 3 laser is but I bet you'll be hurting for a few days.

Yep...Get to the Eye Doctor ASAP as you could have done retnal damage http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif (think about somewhat like looking at someone welding without a facesheild execpt that the lazer is a MUCH more focused light source!)

Man, get to the doctor soon. You can cause severe eye damage with a laser. A class 3 laser is pretty powerful, and can damage the rods and cones embedded into the rear section of your eye. With prolonged exposure, nerve damage is even possible. Most likely it's nothing, and you'll recover rather fast, but I wouldn't let it go untreated.
Take care of yourself,

Go now! Any laser (laser pen, cd/dvd laser) burns a hole in your retina in 5 seconds. A permanent hole. I would also think about legal assistance too. Not necissarily to really screw the company but to at least get your vision repaired if need-be.
I can't believe they let kids play with things like this. Lasers are truly dangerous.

How did you manage this, did you have four dvd player torn apart? I don't understand how the laser got out of the player. Nevertheless, you had better get it checked out. I have burned my eyes welding several times and it hurts real bad. Like you got sand in your eyes. If you can't get to doctor until morning, I suggest you keep your eyes moist with visine and slice up a potato an put the slice on your eye. i don't know why it works, but it always helped me when I burned my eyes.

Skywalker, that was dumb, I know you're kidding! first of all, you wouldn't be able to see anything on your comp, you'd have slight retinal bleeding, and you'd eventuall pass out from pain.

Skywalker,
This retinal transplant you had was also the result of a laser accident? And you are still not wearing protective eye gear? I hope you are ok, but I think the first incident went deeper than your eye. Remember...third times the charm.
Seriously, get well and at least get some mirrored glasses.

this could be a serious problem many of us need to be aware of, is this a normal hazard, I know we all are not going to wear some protective device in from of the comp, how did it happen, can the lazer be seen from outside the unit, should some safty device be added to these units, I have a CD that has a sticker on it says not to look at beam when open.

"...Hit me in the eye."
"...Retinal transplant."
Aw, come on skywakler[TSG], use the keyboard to type in better things than this!
Unless they did the surgery on the mother ship, a retinal transplant is one hell of an operation to perform here on mother earth! The retina is soooooooooo fragile, a retina transplant would be like trying to line a shot lass with wet tissue paper.
Also, unless your eye was very close on-axis to the focusing lens, the dispersion of the beam would be sufficient to render the power to much less than 100uW (it's an infrared [IR] laser used to read/write the CD)...a value/wavelength absorbed by the cornea and lens. Potentially creates little scars and floaters dependent upon how long you stare, but no permanent vision loss!
Take it from someone that in the past has used YAG and CO2 lasers (20W-2kW) to cut metals, ceramics and silicon.
Sheesh...

Come to think of it, a friend of mine used to cut steel with a lazer to make his heatsinks just right a few years ago, I seem to remember it being a class 3, like in a cd-rom drive, granted, it used 220v AC, not 4.5v DC like a dvd drive, but still...

even dough some of u dont belive it to be
the laser whas reflected from the DVD disc into my eye
this is not a computer DVD player
its a standalone one the make is raite
im going to cebit2000 now

the dvd has been send to raite
for some tests
all i did was to look in the gap between the player
and the tray where u put the disc

I for one can't see how the laser could possibly reflect off a DVD and out of the drive. The laser or the disk would need to be on a REALLY weird angle for that to happen. Although, I do work on a sheet metal cutting laser and I would never want that thing pointed at my eye... I accidentally disintegrated a piece of cardboard earlier this week in less than two seconds. Imagine what that would do to an eye...
brandon184
02-25-2000, 03:41 PM
Yes.. It would have to be at an EXTREMELY weird angle.. Actually, now that I think about it.. The way it would go into the drive, you shouldn't actually be able to see the laser, and it would almost be virtually impossible for this to happen. The only way this is possible, is if the device is quite defected, or if you have taken it apart when the event occurred.
Also.. A RETINAL TRANSPLANT? Is that even possible yet?
*Hopefully* SKYWALKER[TSG], Us, Your fellow members of this bbs, can trust that you are being fully honest?

Retinal transplantation is still a very new field, and certainly does not have a high success rate - it's not like "wow, I had my retina transplanted and now I have 20/20!". More like "wow, I had my retina transplanted and now I can see SOMETHING".
As you can see here: http://healthanswers.com/adam/img/img1094.htm
...the retina comprises the tissue at the back of the eye. Transplantation involves the moving of cells from a donor to a recipient.
Cornea transplants, on the other hand, are fairly common.
BTW, DVD/CD players use very low power lasers, and while I believe eye damage can occur, I think the viewer's eye must be in direct contact with the laser beam - in other words, looking directly into the beam. In this case, the user was looking between the crack of the disc tray and the unit, and I HIGHLY DOUBT that any damage could occur that way. Maybe if you put your eye right up against the door gap and sit there for half an hour.. Stranger things have happened I suppose, but...
Not that I don't trust our own SysOpt members, but this reminds me of a kid I went to elementary school with. He told everyone his grandfather was Ulysses S. Grant, that he was born in Egypt, and that his body temperature was 150 degrees or something. Andy, is that you? http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif
If you're not lying, your first thought should be to visit that world renowned retinal transplantation surgeon who fully restored your vision the first time.

The thing I can't figure out is why, after being hit in the eye with a laser, would you immediately log-on to the internet to post your accident on the message board??
It would be like me being electrocuted, and while my hair was still smoking, I use the one phone line to call 911 on to log onto the internet and post "Hey guys, guess what just happened?"
If you're just looking for attention, please don't take accidents like this lightly. I have a good friend (18) that is blind in both eyes because of a bad 4th of July fireworks prank accident. I was there at the time, but wasn't involved.
If you really did get hurt, I would definitely be at the company's throat seeing what can be done. For a DVD to emit a laser like your described, could only mean a MAJOR design flaw in the product.

By Philip Filner, Ph. D.
Recently, MDF has received a number of inquiries from people who listened to a brief broadcast news report about retinal transplants. Apparently , the newscast gave many people the impression that a new way to restore lost or impaired vision was about to become available. The purpose of this report is to respond to those inquiries.
Some researchers do indeed think that it may one day be possible to restore some degree of vision to people with damaged or malfunctioning retinas, by placing in their eyes either retinal transplants or retinal implants.
What is a retinal transplant?
A retinal transplant is a graft of "good" retina tissue onto a non-working retina. The retinal transplant tissue might originate from another human, perhaps just deceased, or an aborted fetus. Less likely origins of the tissue to be transplanted are human retina tissue which has proliferated in culture; or retina tissue from another animal species.
In order for a retinal transplant to work, several technologies which do not yet exist have to be developed:
1.The cells in the transplant must stay alive for a long time, preferably for the life of the recipient
2.Those cells must have, and maintain, the light-sensing activities of normal, healthy retina cells
3.Those cells must transmit electric or electrochemical signals to the brain, which the brain can interpret as the experience of vision.
A handful of laboratories are currently trying to develop retinal transplant technology, or are doing the research on which such technology might eventually be based (see links at the end of this page). Ophthalmic surgeons are still at the stage of testing techniques for placing transplants in the retina. Methods for getting retinal transplants to stay healthy will most likely get worked out first in an animal species other than humans. Some neuroscientists are trying to find conditions under which retinal tissue such as what might be used in a transplant, will produce an electrical signal. The hope of some researchers is that if the transplant produces a 2-dimensional pattern of electrical signals in response to light, e.g. in the shape of an alphabetical character projected onto the transplant, the underlying retina which is not light-responsive will still be able to pick up the signal pattern from the transplant and transmit it to the brain.
This research and development path is "high risk", meaning that it is full of pitfalls, with a high probability that the goal may not be reached.
