Alrighty, I know something is up, and I wanna fix it. My computer is way to hot. With the case on and 3 fans running I'm running around 170F, and even with the case off I'm running around 145F. I feel that this is way to hot, and I want to know how I can cool this puppy down. IF you want my specs here they are:
t-bird 850
Crome Orb fan
Asus A7V
256 megs of ram pc133
Geforce2-mx
soundblaster live 5.1
20gig 7200rpm hd
6 gig 5400rpm hd
zip, dvd, cdrom
Are there any other programs out there to monitor or to help cool down the proccesser besides rain?
Anyhelp would be great
Thanks
Chad
Make sure that your Orb is greased and seated properly. It shouldn't be that hot. You may want to invest in a Fop or Alpha setup. Most guys will tell you that they're better for socket A's.

I think the Tbird 850 is a little much for a Chrome Orb to cool.
Check out the FOP32 or Alpha 6035.

I dont think your fan is the problem. It has to be either the connection between heatsink and cpu, or your fan is not working at all. Have you checked the fan? My chepo coolermaster just went AWOL on me an hour ago(still kinda a newbie, I was talked into the cheap coolermaster by some salesman)I smelled my CPU roasting, temp went to 156F. I have a AlphaPAL6035 Ultra on the way now.
Yea, that Orb should handle it. It's not like your pushin it hard. I think it just isn't locked down properly.

If u ask me i think you're thermostat is giving you a wrong reading, if that's not the prob then u should get a GW FOP32-1, I have one and my idle cpu temps are 31C even with no case fans

Ok, thanks for the info, and now you can call me stupid...but after I got the orb, I just slaped it onto the chip...What are you talking about by greesed up? I'm guessing that this will fix the problem. The first time I slaped it on though, it was mounted wrong and I was getting a booting temp of around 170F....Anyway, explain the 'greesing' part of it and I'll let ya go
=)
Thanks again
Chad
Thermal grease is a compound that must be applied to the surfaces of the heatsink and chip core. It helps to create a better surface of contact to extract heat. The orb probably came w/ a small amount on it. It should be smeared evenly over the contact surface. If you need more it can be purchased at Radio Shack or other electronic stores in your area.
Make sure you have the orb locked down tight.

alrighty, one last question. What is a safe temp to be looking for? seems to be around 40c? Also, are there any temp. montering software out there for the asus mobo?
Thanks for all your help

The Chrome Orb uses a thermal(phase change)pad stock. Some people have missed a bit of the protective cover that comes on the pad and that will cause high temps. Thermal pads are only supposed to be used once so if you do remove the HS you will need to purchase some thermal compound for RadioShack or some quality Artic Silver for 2cooltek.com or the like. Remembering that it is applied after removing all of the old thermal pad with alcohol or a mild solventlike acetone(figernail polish remover).
It is true that the Chrome Orb is definatly not one of the best coolers but it should be able to cool the 850 reasonably well without overclocking. Myself I had one and it was removed as fast as I could get an FOP32-1. The FOP32 is a pain in the **** istalation/clipwise and is responceble for a lot of crushed TBirds but overall a much better cooler.
It should probably run in the 40+C range. Those things suck a lot of juice.
For monitoring I like Motherboard Monitor and CPUCool both for different diagnostic abilities.

CPUCool: Is also a tweaking tool http://www.octools.com/cool.html

a tool called asus probe should have come with your mobo CD, it came with my a7v. it will tell you fan speed, cpu/mobo temps, voltages, etc....

If you really want to bring it down a little more you can try lapping the bottom of the Orb with some very fine grit sand paper with the circle technique.. I find that wet sanding does a much better job too.. brought my temps down from 38C to about 33-34C overclocked a 900@1 ghz.. might help it out a little more..
