I have a GA-586TX motherboard, with a Intel MMX 233MHz CPU. Can I overclock my CPU without having trouble? The reason I would like to overclock, I just purchased a Toshiba CD/DVD drive that calls for a minimum processor of 266MHz or better. I really don't want to purchase another board.
Thanks

The only way to find out is to try it and see http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

You can either increase the multiplier or increase the FSB, or both. Some of these CPUs were multiplier locked so the only way you could overclock them was by increasing the bus speed.

The PMMX 233 was the fastest SS7 processor Intel put out. The chance of going beyond 233 is slim but not impossible. 266 might be within reach but I doubt 300 is possible.

a minimum of 266mhz indicates that you dvd drive requires an AMD cpu or more likely, a Pentium2, since there is no pentium1 266mhz. You might want to look at a hardware decoder or a good videocard like an ATI ____ All In Wonder version. That 233 pentium will have a hard time keeping up with software dvd decoding.

Another possible prospect is that your m/b likely supports the K6-2 processor. Check your m/b's specs, does it support 2.2-2.4v for the vcore processor voltage and a 2x multiplier (K^-s remaps 2x to be 6x, thus 6x66 = 400). If so, then you could likely install a K6-2 400 for a relatively cheap upgrade. That should be enough for standard DVD decoding.

If you want to go the simplier route, go for a hardware DVD decode card as araaraara suggested. Forget about the ATI video card suggestion, as that would still require atleast a decent 300+ MHz processor. You can readily find the high-quality HollyWood+ DVD decode card for under $60 or even a standard Creative DVD hardware inlay card for under $30 at http://www.pricewatch.com .
