i want to take a file and split it up into little file so i can e-mail the diffent pieces to a friend. i can't send anything over 3 megs and the file is 24 megs. i know with unix the command is "split" however i can't seem to find the command for dos. i'm not sure that it can be done with dos. someone mentioned "xcopy -b" might work but he was not elaborate in detail of how. i would really appreciate it.

best bet is to zip it up with pkzip and use its splitting options or something like winrar that will do the same thing. I dont know if winzip has a filesize spanning option or not, but I don't recall one. That is easier than trying to use dos commands to do it. Winrar would be my choice as it has easy options for it.

yes, winzip has disk-spanning

i just realized how much work that would be to do in your case...never mind.

Program called Shredder. I believe it's freeware. Will split it up any way you want and automatically creates a batch file to reassemble. I emailed the program to you. Hope it helps.

I don't know of any native DOS util that supports file-split. I'm afraid that you'll have to use a third party app like has been suggested above. Search for "File Split" on the web, you'll get a bunch of links. That's also a popular type of util in many hack site "Tool Kit" sections. Happy splitting.

there is also a DOS utility called Slice/Splice available from ZDNET, but that is geared towards putting a large file on several floppies. You could make it work, but others might be easier.
