I have a pentium 3 700 sse on a msi 6163 pro board with 320 meg pc 100 ram,can I do a mild overclock without buying cooling etc, if so what could I go up to?also what temperature would be ok after overclocking?
any help would be much appreciated.

As long as you do not raise your voltage above 1.8v, you should be ok. You can change your FSB speed in the BIOS. Try 112 MHz first, that should be relatively safe and would only require a minor increase in voltage if it is not stable. 112 X 7 = 784 MHz, a nice start. Keep going and if your stability becomes an issue increase your voltage and lower your CAS rating to 3. Hope that helped keep us informed on your progress.

I have that board and a PIII-650/100 that overclocks very well. Using the CPU temp sensor, expect readings below 100F. I've run bus speeds all the way up to 155 with a voltage bump and added cooling, your 7x multiplier might not go that far.
When you reach a setting that will POST but not load Windows, back off a notch. Then consider SoftFSB. Using the IC-Works W196x clock generator setting, it provides 32 speeds instead of the "stock" 16. By kicking the speed after Windows loads, I can run faster than I could before. If all goes well, you can create a SoftFSB file for the MS6163Pro and it will kick the speed automatically after Windows is running.
EDIT
So much for the preview. I just noticed your RAM "limitation". That may be what holds you back from light speed. Either way, "mild overclocking" will be a piece of cake.

Hi mark, welcome to SysOpt http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
A mild overclocker, you gotta be a rare breed - we all go to the max around here! tehehe just kidding.
I don't know anything about your board, but I think you could get superb results depending on what settings your board gives you and how fast your ram will go. I found the stock heat sink + fan on my 600E quite good and maybe for moderate over clocking good enough. You need air circulating through the case though, unless your willing to put the life of your CPU on the line for the price of a couple of fans. Depends on your idea of "mild" I think changing the fsb to 112 (7*112 = 784Mhz) or around there would be mild, moderate maybe around 120 (7*120 = 840Mhz) but I would be going with a larger cooler for the CPU and more case fans, thermal paste between the CPU & sink. Other members may think thats high, and others maybe think I'm lowballing it, it's really a matter of preference - or maybe guts
"if ya gonna play you'd better be prepaired to pay" OC has its price and not just on you CPU. My advice, don't rush it, read posts, ask questions
My 600E at 800 idles around 34 deg C and goes to 40 deg C when maxed out.
Good luck
