In case you haven't been reading the thread on morality in today's society, at
http://www.sysopt.com/forum/Forum1/HTML/004452.html

I just issued a challenge to any and all members of the human race there. The challege is simple: Sometime this week (before Mar 1) do a good deed that is both moral and helpful, and challenge others to do the same. It's very simple, but just do something above and beyond what you would normally do.

I accept your challenge and do affirm I will take one day and drive my vehicle as if I was not from N.Y.C. I will be courteous and thoughtful and not mean and ruthless. But only for one day. This is in all seriuosness
and not a joke. This will be very hard for me but I will stick it out.

About 6-7 years ago I was out of work and had just cashed my very last unemployment check. I had $220 in my pocket, and that was ALL the money I had, and wasn't exactly sure where I was gonna get more. But I wasn't too worried, I could make it last at least a month (bills & rent were just paid).

On the way home I stop at a mini-mart just about 3-4 blocks from my house. Buy some needed goods (Mt. Dew) and proceed to drive home. As I round the last corner to my street I see a ragtop Mustang 5.0 come up behind me fast and continue to follow me right to my house. I'm thinking "who's this schmoe?", already forming a not-so-good opinion of the guy.

He jumps out of his 'stang, and says, "Hey guy, did ya drop some money?"

As I feel my pocket, I don't even need to reach in to realize my wad of 20's is gone. Instantly I turn white as a ghost. "OMG, I certainly did! Man! Musta fell out when I pulled my car keys out."

"Bunch of 20's I'd guess. You probably know how many.", he said prodding for at least some verification.

I told him, of course I know, it's all the money I have in the world right now, it's $200 (still had the change from a broken twenty in my pocket.)

So he hands it over and says have a good day. I insist he take $20, $40, something as a reward. He refuses and just says, "Do the same for someone else someday."

Lessons learned?:
I now think twice before judging people by how they look or what they drive.
I now don't think about doing good deeds at all...I just DO them.

Now I'm not no saint or anything. But whenever the opportunity arises, and I have a choice between doing a good deed or doing something more convenient to me...I choose the good deed.

There's a guy I work with, he's kinda a deadbeat. Anyways, I can't afford to pay his rent, BUT, he called today asking if i would work for him tonight so he could go 'borrow' some rent money from the twin cities (on the other side of MN)....

I didn't pay his rent, but his kids will be in bed tonight. And by the way, I had a date with a really HOT girl.... why did I do that? Oh, so his kids wouldn't be outside...wait a minute, its 50 degrees outside! It doesn't matter anymore... oh well, too late...
