I've seen some people state that if you run CPU intensive tasks, the processor will be more susceptible to heat problems than if not.

Then I've read where CPU intensive tasks do not burden the CPU any more than when the computer is idle. An quick reference is http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/faq.html#q37

What do you think, will the processor generate more heat when doing CPU intensive tasks?

If you have a program such as Rain or CPUidle or have an operating system that does so (such as NT), then the processor will receive HLT commands when it isn't being used to full capacity. It will run cooler doing this. Therefore, it will heat up when it is being used to full capacity. However, if you don't have one of the programs or OS's that support HLT commands, then there won't be much of a difference in temperature between idle and full load, IMO.
