Does anyone hear remember the Amiga computer. It had excellent graphics and sound back when other systems were struggling to run DOS at decent speeds. It used seperate video and sound accelerators, much like we use today. Well, Gateway is to release a version of the Amiga soon (no rel date set, yet).
GW bought out the rights to the Amiga name a while back, and they plan to revive it. It will have a new ATI video chipset, and a Transmeta cpu. While I doubt it will be a cool system for Quake3, it will finally provide us with hand-on testing of the Crusoe cpu. Currently, it is the only desktop Transmeta implementation in development I know of.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the Amiga come out as a replacement for the Commodore 64?
Ah the memories of youth........

Gateway did drop the project for awhile, but for some reason they have started redevolopment of the Amiga. I beleive it to more of an attemt at putting a Transmeta cpu in a affordable system. An excellent strategy for entering the budget pc market. Tansmeta chips are dirt cheap for OEMS, and OEM Ati cards are dirt cheap. Looks like GW plans to offer it as a value pc.
While this is definitely not going to a hardcore gaming pc, it will provide many people with enough power to use the internet, type, play a few multimedia presentations, and maybe play a few games (if your not extremely picky about fps). The ATI card is probably used because it will have TV-out (which ATI does quite well), and people can use this directly with their existing home entertanment system. If they can market these at a value price, it will really hurt WebTV and many budget companies like eMachines.

I thought GW gave up on Amiga. Check this out:

By the way, if it makes a comeback, I have a full Amiga 500 system I'd be willing to part with!!

Oh my, the Commodore 64, when a floppy was really a floppy, when you plugged your computer into a T.V. set. When "basic" was not so basic. The good 'ol days. Hehehe
Sometimes I wonder where I would be if I never got that VIC-20 at K-Mart. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
