Okay... logically it makes sense, I used NT4 for a while at my summer job (city hall, long story http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif ) and Win2k as the successor, I would expect the TCP/IP stack to be far more optimized than win9x.

But, I have my reg-tweaked out win98 box getting roughly the same download speeds as my win2k box. For the win2k box, I just downloaded that patch, opened it in notepad to see what it was adding... Oddly enough, I noticed that in my registry none of those values existed yet... Anyway, I went ahead and added them in. No noticeable differences... my download speed still averages 80-200kb/sec like it was before.

Okay... well, there's a twist that might pose relevance. Both my win2k box and my win98 box are behind my p90 proxy/firewall/router running a program called ShareTheNet that uses Linux kernel 2.0.36. Basically, it's just a program that will fit on a bootable floppy disk (so you don't need a cdrom drive or hard drive) and provide IPMASQ, NAT, DNS, etc like in Sygate.

I've read about MTU adjusting with Linux but since I'm using ethernet rather than dialup PPP, I don't need to adjust it from it's default 1500.. anything else in there I can tweak?

Here's a crude sketch of how my network looks like:

[ Internet ]<--->[cable modem]<--->[router]<--->[8port 10/100 switch]<--->[client1 or client2]

I guess another question would be for those of you who used win98 with cable modem, did you ever tweak your registry? And when you upgraded to win2k, did you tweak your registry? Was the speed increase from solely upgrading, or upgrading + reg tweaking?

Btw, my provider is Mediaone RoadRunner in Los Angeles.
