The question you asked is analogous to "My car stopped running- what is wrong?" without any info to go on. Dave McFear 02-20-2000, 10:47 PM Well if you have a backup. try it , and if you don't, press f8 at boot and go into safemode. If that works then try to fix your registry files . Made sure you have backup program that can go in from the dos prompt. I use at least two backup programs. One to get me in from dos, and the other to backup from windows. Mntsnow 02-21-2000, 01:50 AM As dave mentioned What was recently done to the computer just prior to it starting to act up? such as Driver updates, New hardware, New programs, Deleted programs yad yad yad. Usually I find that freeze ups while booting is a hardware/driver conflict problem. If you can boot up fine in "safe mode" then I would really look hard at your drivers and "windows" hardware configuration. Mntsnow grandslammer 02-21-2000, 02:07 AM Hi. Have you removed any programs/software lately? When you remove programs do you actually go to the add/remove programs section of your control panel? A lot of people don't realize that they can't just "delete" programs from windows explorer. Do you remember doing anything "to" windoze before this started? Mike P. Nathan 02-21-2000, 04:48 AM Another option to the great suggestions is to boot up to your boot disk and try the following at the a: prompt; sys c: Your command.com or io.sys might be corrupted too. That might get you past that screen. Let us know what happens. burnup 02-21-2000, 10:16 AM i use system mechanic to clean up my registry and regclean by microsoft. they could have cause this problem. well i guess a good clean full format is probably best way to go eh? burnup 02-21-2000, 10:49 AM when i restarted in MS-DOS(not shell) i automatically get a error saying "Bad command or file name" i usually see a blue bar somewhere and it looks for mouse etc.. could this be the problem? Wiz 02-21-2000, 11:52 AM that means you have a problem with your autoexec.bat. I wouldnt suggest you play with it unless you have some experience there. If i were you , i'd take it to a professional. oblivion 02-21-2000, 11:57 AM Start your comp, tap f8....you should come to a startup menu.......select the one taht says "command prompt" it should be #6(maybe #6) you should come to a "c:" prompt. Then type in "scanreg restore",press enter. (I believe this is the correct command,if it is not I will post the proper one in a few minutes, after I check it out.) When you get there you will have the option of restoreing a copy of your registry from 1-3 days ago........you should be allright then.Win 98 takes a snapshot of your registry every day that you sucsessfully load windows this restoration should get you back in bussiness. And do not screw around with your registry, leave it alone period,or use the microsoft "regclean",but do not even mess with it if you do not know how to fix it,I am only speaking from experiance. Its not like your bx will be running any better to speak of by cleaning it. I have seen system mechanic screw a few registrys up.......those warnings are there for a reason. daveleau 02-21-2000, 09:25 PM To clean my registry I use a bigger name utility like Norton Utilities or Mijenix Fix It 99. I like Mijenix the best for this. It cleans up alot of what Norton does not. The only problem with it is that it doesn;t like norton and deletes Norton's refistry items when you run it. I wonder if that was done on purpose? http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif Good luck Dave SysOpt.com
