I know this is probably a stupid question, but please bear with me. I want to upgrade to a PIII 700-800mhz CPU and was hoping that I could do so without changing my PII motherboard. Intel says that, because the PII and PIII architectures are the same, doing so is possible, conditional on BUS, etc. I have an ASUS P2E-M board with a PII 333 right now. Is it possible to just swap the processor, or is this just a pipe dream? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

That board will not make you happy with that new CPU. You will never get it to default speed, in fact you'd be pushing the board to get it to half the speed (350mghz). Mainboards go for about $100 for a decent one and $130 for a real good one, it would be worth the investment. RAM prices are as low as they can be right now, so it would be good to get some extra while your'e at it. www.pricewatch.com (http://www.pricewatch.com)

First off, download the latest BIOS for your motherboard, and flash it, just to see how high a cpu speed it will support.

But the latest BIOS flash is probably too old, cause the m/b is old, so I doubt it, I think it's time to get a new m/b.
