Anyone know why the network neighborhood icon wouldn't show up on the windows desktop? I've got the nic, protocals, sharing & client installed....is there a patch that addresses this problem? or a registry edit to fix it. Also i'm not getting a login prompt but i do have a link light.
strange...and i have no problem setting something like this up so i'm guessing it's maybe something i mentioned above?
Any ideas?

You havent disable the icon by chance using TweakUI? you might want to try TweakUI and make sure it's not disabled and if it isnt try rebuilding the icons. (both options are found in there)

Yeah mine is gone too. We are setting up a network in my house and I installed the drivers for the card and the icon dissapeared. I also did that to my brother about a month ago and he couldn't connect to the internet. Hehe

I install a lot of NICs, and I see this happen sometimes. Usually I just goto the network control panel and adjust the settings from there. I've never had one that didn't connect to the network just because the icon wasn't on the desktop. If you can't get it to connect, try uninstall all the protocols and rebooting, then add them. Or, uninstall the communications portion of windows, reboot, and reinstall it.
This would involve going to control panel/ add/remove programs/ windows setup tab.

Are you using Win 95 or Win98? With Win 95 you can turn it on using poledit.exe on the OS cd. It's also on the Win 98 cd. Just use start, find to get them.

Well, I'm not getting a login prompt. The card does have a link light and I can see it from network neighborhood and I can browse it's shared resources.
And I've already tried uninstalling/reinstalling all the network components.

there is a registry string (i think, it may be a DWORD. i don't know) that can disable your network neighborhood icon... i know because i used it to disable it (cuz i don't have a network)... usually you have to manually put it in, though.... one of the things you installed may have disabled it *for* you... i can't remember the key off hand, but will get back to you as soon as i can find it... (darn it! i just disabled the thing like 2 days ago! sheesh...) well, whatever... so, i will look around and see if i can find it and then i'll get back to you asap....

ok... well, i found it...
Hide the Network Neighborhood Icon (Windows 9x and NT)
The Network Neighborhood icon is shown on the Windows desktop whenever Windows networking is installed, by enabling this setting the icon will be hidden.
In addition, disables UNC capability from within the Explorer interface, including the Start menu's Run command, UNC paths configured by the administrator in Policies for shared folders, desktop icons, the Start command, and so forth. This does not impair the functionality of the command line Net.exe command.
Registry Settings:
Key: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\Explorer]
Value Name: NoNetHood
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Data: (0 = disabled, 1 = enabled)
got this from here (http://www.regedit.com/) at this (http://www.regedit.com/cgi-bin/detail?id=150) address.
(well, it was a DWORD afterall... http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif )
as you can see, it does impair some of the functionality of the network... so, this may be your problem... as i said before, this usually doesn't go there unless you manually enable it, but who knows what some software can do....
