hello,

I just got my new Celeron 566 FC-PGA and im running into a little trouble getting it to 850. Is there anyone out there who has NOT been able to get to atleast 850? I dont think i have a bad chip, but i want to get some advice before i go spending a fortune on cooling parts. here is my setup:

Celeron 566 FC-PGA
Abit BH6 v1.0
Generic Slotket (I guess its a generic one.. it doesnt have a manufacturer listed on the package...tried it with jumpers set at 66mhz and 100mhz)
96MB PC100 Ram (64MB and 32MB sticks)
generic socket 7 heatsink/fan (could be my problem??)
Windows 98 First Edition

I have the Speed Error Hold disabled as well as the AGP set to 2/3. And im kinda sure its not the memory cause i just pulled it out of my AMD system which was running at 100mhz FSB. Here is a list of my results so far:

8.5x @ 66mhz runs fine
8.5x @ 75Mhz runs fine
8.5x @ 83Mhz runs fine

and the 8.5 X 100mhz FSB i get mixed results:
1.7v no boot
1.75v boots, but locks at splash screen
1.8V boots, but gives me registry errors on loadup, but will not load into windows
1.85v boots up, goes thru splash screen, but stops at black screen before windows loads, but i dont get any registry errors at all.
think i should try 1.9? what is max safe voltage for this chip?

Now from my experience having a 300a, this 566 has made it a lot further than my 300a ever did. Does anyone think i stand a good chance of getting it to 850 with better cooling or a better slotket? I will get a Golden Orb if that will give me a chance of getting it up to 850mhz. but i dont want to spend that money and get dissapointed like i did with my 300a which never would even post above 374mhz... thanks for any advice or help you guys/gals can give me.

If it were me i would get the Iwill sloket and a better H/S fan comboand then you may get it to 850 but rememer that all cpus are diffent and some of them will just not go that far

I'm in the same situation as you are with my celeron2 566. It'll run fine at everything BUT 850. However, on my Abit BM6, I can't get it to pick a voltage higher than 1.70v, so I don't know if it just needs a little more voltage to get to 850. I just need to get a new CPU. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

I had a 566 cele on an Abit BH-6 with just about the same setup as you, and all I could get out of the thing was 707. It would not do 850, but would boot to windows then freeze.
Sometimes windows would load but then BSOD.
I got spoiled by my 300A too, right to 450 from the word go with no problems.
The 566 would do 707 (8.5x83) all day with no problems, but if I went any higher,it would wig out. Mp

Update your bios. (from abit)
Get a better HS/Fan (orb or Global win)
Get some silver heat sink paste.
Good luck.

thanks for the help. looks like there is not be able to get it to 850, but im gonna try all i can to see anyway. Im going to get a better heatsink/fan today and hope it works. I'll also try the latest bios also and see if that helps. Hopefully something will help. im not wanting much, just 850 http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif gonna try my best to get it. thanks again for all the info and help

WOOHOO! I cant believe it. I went out today and bought a little heatsink made by Antec. Not sure which model, but it looked better than the one i had on here and was all i could find so i decided to give it a try. Im sitting here typing this on my new 850Mhz Celery http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif my temp is holding around 37C. I think its ok for now. gonna run UT some more for a while and see if its stable, but its looking good so far.

now its time to invest in a Golden Orb. Can anyone recommend a good one? Im wondering if the Chrome Orb can be modified to fit on a Abit BH6 board because i would like to get one but not sure if it can be modified to work on a Socket 370 since it was made for a AMD Slot A. Any suggestions?

thanks again everyone for the help. i just KNEW i could get it here. now just if i can keep it here http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Howdy! I've been following your thread closely, as I plan to buy the Celeron 566, and intend to overclock. I've also got the BH6, but I'm wanting to get the Abit Slocket III. I've already bought the Golden Orb from http://www.puicorp.com/, anticipating the need for some good cooling. As far as I know, they'll only fit the chips they were designed for. They're supposed to be really good coolers, though, and the price isn't bad. Best of luck!

thanks for that address. I think i'll go ahead and order one from there. but I dont think i will even need that much cooling. its been holding steady at 37C for the last 5 hours and has been running steady even after playing UT for 3 hours straight. but im gonna get a golden orb anyway just for the added cooling cause i want to keep it as cool as i can. i just couldnt believe how easily it hopped on up to 850mhz with this antec cooler http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif thanks again everyone for the advice and help.

I am one of those that cannot get the magic 850. I have the Golden Orb, but still no overclock. At least you managed to make it. I am looking for the P3 next, not sure if it will be the 700 or 750. I just want one that will OC a bit. Maybe a 850 if the price is right, then an oc will not really be needed.
