shouldn't a power suppy still fun even if there are no compents connected to it? i am trying to build my 1st pc. i connected motherboard, video card, monitor and nothing( no powersuppy fan running either).. disconnected all components and powered up .. still no power suppy fan. checked power cable and its good. i am gettting 5v dc and 4.5 on 2 of the cables (purple and green)coming out of power supply. the fuse is good!
do i deffinitley have a bad power supply????

Take an ohm meter or a test light or something to test it don't presume it. I did that and mad a fool of my self at the store trying to return it.

How long is the power supply on? It's possible, somewhat unlikely, that you have a smart fan that only comes on when a certain temperature is reached. What is the make and model of the power supply?
Oh, forgot to ask, Is this an ATX supply?

hey, it is a atx power supply.. made by Deer computer co. medel is DR-250atx.. i have not left the power on very long.. when i went to test it, just the mother board, ram , cpu , and video nothing happened.. shouldn't there be more ouputs from the power suppy besides a 5 and 4.5 volts dc?

You should be able to find the following
+5vdc, -5vdc, +12vdc, -12vdc.
Edit- I see you posted twice and you listed different voltages that were written on your powersupply- edit

Hi japerritt
Please do not post the same thread in more than one forum. That makes it difficult to keep a common troubleshooting thread going because replies are scattered. Your best bet is to choose the most appropriate forum for your topic.
If you want, you can edit your post too, by hitting the http://www.sysopt.com/forum/edit.gif button by your name. It will open the text box so you can add/change. Thanks!
