K6/2-450 2.4Volt - any clocking stories here?

Hey again all!

Just traded for an AMD K6/2-450. Heard a lot of good things about them. Heck, I got a 300, and ran it at 380 for, well forever. Second one. First one, guy told me to run it at 412. Worked for a very short time that way. ANYWAY...

I figure, my 300 @ 380 is what, 26.6% overclock. Not too bad, huh? Well, I figured I'd get a minimum of 20% O/C to, maybe 25%. Fair expectation, huh?

Well, I was also thinking I was getting a 2.2Volt chip too.

Well, I got a 2.4 volt chip. I'm running it at 500mhz. PERIOD. Had to go to 2.6 volts to get that! So, that's 11% O/C. WHEW! BOY! I figured I'd get say 522 to 550 out of it, which would've been 16% to 22%. I thought that would be fair.

So, from all of your experiences, does the 2.2v 450 clock better than the 2.4volt job? What kind of results did you get?

Well, you went and did it!That's great. Give it a week or two, then try to jack it up some. Still have stock fan and heatsink? I can send you some good thermal paste, too.

I used that di-electric silicone grease I always use..Temps now are

500mhz @ 2.6v, @ floating around 86F

Tried 522 @ 2.7, but crapped out real early during Unreal Tournament. Didn't know if I wanted to try 2.8v or not, so didn't.... HA!

Anyway, don't know how old chip is, may need to burn in where it is, but leery of above 2.7v.

Wish I had a 2.2volt. OH well!

Got an e-mail from someone who ran one at 3.1 volts for over 4 months! Imagine that! Whew! No, I'm keeping mine at 2.6 volts and 500.

I'd do 2.7 if it would help, but for another 25mhz, heck with it...

the 2.4 volt chips are good for 2.9 to 3.1 volts if you have very good cooling to it I ran mine at 525 MHz @ 3.1 volts for months with no bad effects in fact it really ran more stable like that than stock http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
I was running it on a Asus P5A-B mobo with 64 meg generic PC-100 Memery @ 5.0 x 105
it would not go above 525 MHz even ran 3.3 volt through it once for a few min
also the P5A-b mobo runs the I/O volts at 3.5 not 3.3 so I'm sure that also helped a little in getting it to 525Mhz

and as for the 2.2 volt they do 550 with the right set up no problem at 2.5 or 2.6 volts

As long as you keep a k6-2 chip cool nthey will o/c extremely well. I'm running a 2.4v k6-2 450 at 523 (95*5.5) and 2.9v right now. Cooling is the big part. I was running an oversized hs/fan combo to get 500, but now I using a custom heatsink and two high rpm 4 inch case fans to cool it. I'm finally stable at 523, and 550 might not be too far off at this rate.

on a tyan tirinity 1590s
rockstable with win2000 and even if i play unreal tournament all day or quake III
no problems at all (and ofcourse a large heatsink with two 21 cfm fans now it stays realy cool !(with the case open)

Hey Grandslammer: tell me sumthin...If my Mbd with a bus speed of 100 and a multiplier of 4.5, will only support or attain a clock speed of 450Mhz no matter what proceesor I install, right ? But I have to update my Mbd's bios so that it will support the higher
rated CPU's, right? I wanna get this straight once and for all. I mean, even after bios upgrade that will support, say, a K-3-550
there no way to acheive this due to the limitations of the multiplier, right ???.I'm trying to figure out which would be the best CPU within the limits of my Mbd. Am I making sense?? Let me know...OK?

Well Ed, get a K6/2-500. Or a 450 (2.2v) Anyway, set your multiplier to 2x, and your fsb speed to 95mhz. That will actually give you 570. I'd say get the 500 and run it at 570. Then, as history and my hallucinations show us, bump it up to 100 fsb, or 600!

Then, watch as all those little 1's and 0's scream! as they fly across your monitor! See, the little re-direction from 2x to 6x is in the AMD chips, not your bios. It's just how the chips recognize the 2x setting. They know that you couldn't possibly want a 2x multiplier, so they give you 6x!

Hey Mke: I don't have 95mhz. The next one down from 100 is 83 mhz. SO, if I set my multiplier at 2 and the bus to 83, my 300CPU would read at 498???? Wouldn't it just die rather abruptly?>?> If I did get the 500, does it just plug in the same hole and need a bigger heatsink and fan? This was alot simpler when all I had to do was change the one little jumper to get 350!! I'm running at 2.4 volts nad have been since Sept. do I need to change that too??? Well Ed, the 83 mhz fsb setting can be a real b*tch! you may end up corrupting data at that speed. My AMD's (that I've tried with that speed) didn't like 83mhz at all. My old P200mmx didn't mind it, but the AMD's showed all kinds of errors. You may well want to avoid that altogether!

Too bad you don't have 95..... Maybe I could send you mine. HA!

i must have the worst chip then! i have the 2.4V version of the k6-2 450 and i cannot get it run stable at 500 no matter what i do and it is around 100F on a good day.....argh!!!!

Is it just me or does temp really start to be a prob after 500 mhz? I'm running my wifes 450 (2.2) at 500@2.4v, but if I put it any higher I have to go to 2.6v and man that temp climbs. Oh well, maybe with a new cooler?
