man how are you duron guys hitting 1ghz? my 650 won't go any higher than 950. my best stable seting is 11x8.5(943). i have a global-win fop-38(loud a** delta fan) with arctic silver, and my idle temp is around 37c/98f at full load it gets no higher than 105, so heat is not an issue. after 950, i get windows protection faults when win98 starts up. i tried running win98 setup from cd after booting up from bootdisk, but no go. totaly screwed up my h/d and i had to reformat. i am begining to think it may be my p/s, but would that be the case if win98 attempts to start?
by the way...i'm not whining, i know i got a great overclock. i just wanna see 1gig(without paying for it) http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
sorry about the double post, thought i deleted the other one(didn't know only mods could do that)

voltage is as high as it can go on my a7v. i'm not about t o try the voltage mod on a 180 dollar m/b. so guess i'm as high as i'm gonna go.

You might also want to change the CAS settings for your RAM to 3 in the bios if you have not already tried it.

i tried that target...i can now start windows with 981mhz(9x109), but win98 locks up immediatly. i unplugged everything from my m/b except the cpu fan and the hard drive. turned puter back on and still same thing happens. would that mean it's not a p/s problem then?
it could be that your power supply is not giving it the right amount of power to get the chip to the 1 GIG mark that you want
I have two exactly the same setups here
they are K7M mobos with slot A 750 Tbirds in them same ram video and harddrives. The one with a 250 power supply I can only get to 936mhz and the one with a 350 power supply will get all the way up to 1102 mhz and it don't madder what chip I put were the same results
I hope this will help you out

thanks drn....what exactly happens with the computer with the 250 p/s? will it start windows, then lock up? or does it not post at all? what's the goin rate on a 300 p/s?
it gets to windows and lockes up or i get the blue screen of death

thanks... i just called a local computer store. they have 300 p/s's on sale for 29.99
a 350 p/s is 80 bucks. think i'll try the 300.

let us now if that works out for you

Make sure that it is a good quality 300 watt power supply your looking at. I have purchased low-end 300's that proved to be less stable with Athlons than some of my better grade AMD approved 250's. Check out AMD's list of Athlon approved power supplies before purchasing.

This is interesting...
Anyone know if the same applies when trying to overclock P3's to around the 1Ghz mark???
Cheers

Due to the nature of the P3's core design, it does not pull the extreme amounts of power that the Athlon requires. This is the largest reason for AMD's lack of poliferation into the mobile market.
I would still recommend a good 300watt PS for 1+ GHz P3 systems, but I don't examine the PS specs nearly as close as I do when building an Athlon-based system. Even with the lower wattage demands of the SocketA Athlons as compared to the earlier Slot A types, I tend to be very particular to the type of PS I use when dealing with Athlon-based CPUs.

ARRRRGH.... now i'm torn. i just found out that cable internet is ready in my neighborhood. i can't afford both this month. do i get the power supply and try for 1 gig, or do i get cable internet???????????
*sigh* no matter which way i go, i'll wish a few days later that i got the other one.....guess i'll make a decision tomorrow.

Well, that would be an easy decision in my shoes.... The fastest chip in the world won't speed up a 56k connection....
I've built, and am using a 1ghz Athlon system... Boots fast! ... but still aggravates me to no end waiting on the web...
Ohh Road Runner... where for art thou Road Runner?...
you are at 950 now and you will not see any more in performance in only 50 mhz jump get the cable and wait on the power supply till you can get a really good one so you don't have to upgrade it again the next time you get a new cpu and cant get 2 gig's out of it because you were cheap and got a lower quality one
i have been on cable for over 2 years now and i could never go back to a phone line not even ADSL can compare to it

I agree with these guys and blame it on you power supply. I have a Duron 600@1000mhz and I am running it with a 300 watt Antec power supply(came with antec case). The cpu is running at 1.7 volts but PCprobe reports 1.79v. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif I have a Global Win FOP 38(still waiting on artic silver).
I too would go for the faster internet connection. The extra 50mhz are just for bragging rights. J/K http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

well...it's a mute point right now. i called and tried to set up my cable account, and the cable to my hood is having probs(only been installed for 4 days....lol) they say it probably won't get fixed till the 28th. so guess i'll get the p/s tomorrow. i already cancelled my isp tho http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif guess it's netzero till next month http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

well... i purchased an enermax 331 watt powersupply today(amd approved for duron). and still can't get any higher than i could with my 250 watt powersupply. it is a macdaddy powersupply tho http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif think i'll keep it.
<IMG SRC="http://members.home.net/cam-t/gig.jpg" border=0>
I just wanted to see it! I'm perfectly happy at 900 so far. It wouldn't load windows with 1.8v, and I'm not going any higher. Don't go spending too much on 50MHz http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
You'll loooove cable. I've been on it for a year now...dial up is a form of torture now.
