I'm looking at a new computer today and don't
know if I should go with the Celeron 500Mhz
or the Pent III 500 any suggestions? it's mainly a game computer. TIA :-)

The celeron uses the old 66mhz bus, which means it's memory throughput is limited as compared to the newer p3 coppermine 500's 100mhz bus. Also, the p3 cu is a smaller die size, which leads to less heat and a newer core design. The cu also support SSE, an advanced multimedia instruction set (like AMD's 3dnow!), which many new games and programs are starting to support. Also, if you ever interested in overclocking the cpu later one, the p3 cu 500 should be able to hit 700+ mhz with a decent system setup.

I'm building my first computer so I'm not experienced. But here is what I'm doing:
getting a PIII compatable mother board and using a slocket adapter to run a celeron 466. That should last me for a while until the PIII drops in price. Then I just drop it in.

Currently, one of the best gaming solutions is the celeron 366. A very high percentage of these cpu's will run on a 100mhz FSB, which makes them a 550mhz cpu. Considering they cost less than $50 US, a slocket is around $15, and a good heatsink around $20 (Alpha fep32), you could have a 550mhz system for a good price. For a slocket, I would recommend an Iwill SlocketII, since it also has support for a p3 cu later on.
