my celeron 566:
celeron malay
566/128/66/1.5v
L024A829-1059 SL46T
one of the more succesful overclocked 566's (46), that's why I got it. it will boot fine at 566 on my Abit BM6 (latest BIOS flash). Here's what happens when overclocking this monster:
(8.5*66)= 566Mhz (1.5v) >> No problems
(8.5*75)= 638Mhz (1.5v) >> No problems
(8.5*83)= 705Mhz (1.6v) >> Runs ok in everything but 3D, and I mean everything. Prime95, RC5, DVDs, etc. all day no errors. When I do 3d, i'll get pauses about 5 mins into the game like it's going to lock up, but if I wait, it will resume. After 3 or more "pauses" the game will freeze, however, I can still hit Crtl+Alt+Del and get a windows cursor.
(8.5*100)= 850Mhz (1.65v) >> Runs same as at the 83Mhz FSB, expect "pauses" are longer, and when I play 3d, the entire computer will go into standby which I can't recover from. Increase in voltage doesn't help.
(8.5*105)= 893Mhz (1.7v) >> More stable than any other mode. I can play any 3D for more than 20mins, but it will go into standby after a while with "pauses"
I'm begining to think it might be my motherboard, because even with the flash, it doesn't correctly display the Mhz in BIOS after 850. I dunno what is going on with the processor. It stays cooled at 75F even under full 100% load. Here's a quick run down of my hardware:
Abit BM6 motherboard
2x 64MB PC100 SDRAM
Maxtor 10GB 7200RPM 2MB
GeForce2 MX w/active cooling
Sound Blaster Live! Value
Creative 5x/32x Encore DVD
3Com 3905B-TX 10/100Mbit LAN
Mircosoft Intellimouse Explorer
Mircosoft Sidewinder GamePad
all running Win2k with service pack 1
HELP!

what kind of motherboard do you have?

I have BX133 RAID and my problems are somehow similar. My HW is BX133 RAID, Celeron 566, Vodoo2 AGP, ATA66 WD20,4G disk.
I can set the frequency only to 566 and 850 (and higher). if I
want to set it for example to 700 or 750 it doesn't work - to explain: I can set it in
BIOS but when restarting PC frequency 850 is displayed always!! Also when
working on this speed 850 Win98 works for some time then freezes and W2k
freezes in the middle of loading.
Please help!!

Using the abit bx133 and win2k it will freeze on bootup due to the lack of voltage. If you raise .05V you will boot but if you run a but intensive task you will get a BSOD and reboot.
If you raise .1V there should be no problems
I am having problemas with my p3 750@930 I am ok at this speed but want more and I cant raise more voltage than 1.9. Still the processor runs very very cool. I guess I'll have to wait for awhile to let it burn in more.

im using a Abit-Be6 w/ newest bios flash

Ahh, the BE6 directly supports P3s and C2. The BM6 does as well, but only the CeleronII and up to 600. I wish someone else might have had a similar problem, so I could see if getting a new mobo would help. I would hate to get a new motherboard, and the processor still not overclock.. well, if I had a new motherboard (UDMA66,AGP4x no ISA support) I wouldn't be ALL that upset, but i'm kinda broke http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

::sniffle:: oh, shut up! why must you say the things that hurt so much?
EDIT - i just thought of something. is there a way to remove that 10% voltage-safety-thing on my motherboard's BIOS. The highest voltage I can set my 1.5v celeron2 566 is 1.7v. I think if I could get 1.75v to the CPU, it would stay stable.

im not sure of the pins you can tape at all to see if a voltage change would occur.... but do you have the newest bios for that mobo?? http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif maybe that would have s ome settings changes...
im using the european bios version, not the USver. for the be6 since that webpage had the new bios out on the page before the us page had it up..
...not sure if thatll help to find a newer version for ya...

Rather than forking out for a new mobo on the offchance that it might allow you to OC further, you could try an Abit Slotket 3. It's a really well made piece of kit and will allow you to increase Vcore further than your current 10% limit, but be careful not to leave the mobo set to +10% and set a voltage increase on the Slotket!

I wish I could do that, but the Abit BM6 is a socket 370 motherboard ;(

A couple of suggestions based on the experience I had on my C566 o/c to 850:
1. update your BIOS to the latest version. (my jet-way J994AN-L reported my overclocked 566 (850) as 66x17, fixed with the BIOS update, now it's 100x8.5.
2. Important: restore your BIOS setting to "setup default" or other conservative default settings first. You can tweak from there later if you can oc at this setting.
3. Better cooling for your CPU. I used a cheap HS/Fan and my system locked at 50C, now with Golden Orb, CPU temp down to 30-35 but occationally reach 45-47 but never freezed since then at 850.
4. Try to fresh install your OS at non-overclocked speed.
5. I am not too sure about what can be done by so called burn-in,that my system is getting more stable after first few days. Better contact on pins? Might be but I am not very convinced that's the mahor reason.
6. The only headache I am having is the unreallistic 3D mark 2000 scores. I got 3450 for WinMe and (sigh) 1500 for Win2K on my visiontek GTS2-32M/Celeron 850 (default benchmark). Details: 128M PC100 RAM, D3 6.31 driver, lasted BIOS and VIA 4in1 driver - all the systems same to this setting got 6000+ on madornion site. Overclock GTS card to 225core/350mem doesn't seem to fix it.
I don't have problem with other bench marks like sandra and wintune BTW.
What else can I try?

well, yes and no.
I just got back from fall break; my classes start Wed. The good news is that I replaced one of my 10ns PC100 SDRAM chips for a faster 8ns PC100 and once I set the voltage to 1.65v, i'm flying high. It doesn't lock up, but I do get some little pauses in 3d. Oh well, NO LOCKUPS! I'm not sure if the ram was it (i did change a few more settings) but it does work.
Bad news ::sniflle:: I've noticed just how much it sucks to be single. Going to the NC State Fair alone SUCKS. All my friends moved away to go to college, and it's been slow going with making new ones... but I do have 850Mhz of Celeron2 processing power... i guess... http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif
