I have signed up for dialup from www.paclink.net (http://www.paclink.net) - very cheap but a good connection and lots of access numbers here in SO CAlifornia. PPP works in Linux, BeOS, and of course Winders. I will likely be subscribing to DSL through them in the near future.
Now I have 4 dialup ISPs - and AOL is about to get the old "heave-ho!"

Try to cancel AOL and see how many free months you can get. I went three months trying to cancel and they kept giving me free months. My wife used to work with a guy who has tried every month for the last two years and still gets it free.I almost had to argue with the guy to get them to cancel.
Why so many ISP's? Are some free?

One is free: son-in-law works for a small ISP - my comp account works in Linux but the bummer is while they have put everything into high speed DSL/Cable support, they hav enot bothered to upgrade their 28800 modem banks... and I only get the dialup for free.
One is LAFN - $40 per year and it works in Linux but uses a proxy http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif to the Internet - the 56K isn't bad 49 - 48s usually but it gets bogged down a lot of times.
I kept AOL for about 4 years - I never had any of the connection problems people complain about but I don't like the inactivity timers and especially don't like the fact that they do not offer standard ppp so that I can get a connection in BeOS or Linux. I told them that was the reason I was canceling - and it's canceled.
So now I have added Paclink to my arsnel of ISPs - so far so good. If it remains this good I will DSL through Paclink - their tech support say a DSL Linux connection is no problem.

Hi CMonster, I forgot to ask ... how far are you from the teleco switch for the DSL?
