probably skipping that new mb and moving on so:
would I get better performance from an original athlon or duron? ( dad won't spend $100 more for a thunderbird http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif )

Athlon is better. It's like Intel's PIII,it also has 512kb L2 cache I think.Duron is like the Celeron,it has less cache.

and athlon 1/2 core speed or less right?

that is right the Duron runs full speed and the Athlon runs at ether at 1/3 , 1/2 or 2/5 but still will out do the Duron clock for clock speed

Here in Canada the Classic cost 20 bucks more than the Tbird but the mobo cost 100 bucks more I have 6 Classic's all over clocked at least 150 mhz on Asus K7M mobo's amd 1 SlotA Tbird on K7M and it is over clocked from 750 to 1100

I use the Liberator 2 Goldfinger device on all of them to manipulate the multiplier and voltage. On the Classic's I use a 1/3 cache speed. With the Tbird it runs at full speed so no need to play with that

The Tbird out does the Classic at same clock speed by 22% to 34% depends on the app i run

Duron 700 $109

T-Bird 700 $149 (bought one yesterday) We got lucky and managed to get one with the l1 bridges closed = easy overclock on the A7V ~~looking to o/c to 1Ghz.

Whoop! Better tell Dad to look at those price differences again.
