Howdy folks. Does anyone know how to get OE 5
.1 to open? I used to be able to use OE 5.1 but ever since I d/l'd IE5.01 or some update to IE5.01 I can't get OE to open!!! It shows up in add/remove as OE5 but won't open!! If I uninstall OE5 it reverts back to OE4 and opens fine. Shouldn't it show up as OE5.01 in the add/remove? I used to be able to use OE5.1 before. I liked the switch ID function
According to the "known issues in this release" it says to remove "PGP plugin" in IE4 before installing OE5.1. There is no reference to PGP in add/remove? Any ideas? This is driving me nuts!! Thanks

If you're having this much trouble, un-install it and re install. If you don't have the prog on cd, go to www.microsoft.com (http://www.microsoft.com) + downloads + windows update. S/B under your links in Favorites also. It's only a 8 min download, Outlook Express, that is. Regarding IE 5.0 or 5.01, when you uninstall using the link in programs it will give the option to Repair.. hope this helps,,, Take me to your leader.
Thanks. I tried all that before. No luck.

Buji, You will not find the PGP plugin in the "add remove programs" you will find it in the plugin folder though if you have that plugin installed http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\PLUGINS

Just for the heck of it you may want to try
start/run and type in msimn.exe
If that works, then you just got a shortcut problem on the quicklaunch. The mail button on IE would require a repair of IE.
BTW-mine is listed as just 5 in my add/remove list, I got 5.01 too.
hope you get it working Buji http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Thanks for the tip Dave. Still no luck. Hourglass comes up and then nada! Can't get in! Have to unistall to get into OE! I'm starting to go crrrrrazy.

Have you run a SFC (system file checker) to see if you have any corrupt or missing system files? just go Start->run->SFC-->hit enter that will launch the program and it will walk you thru the rest of it. Have your Win98 cd handy incase you need to restore some files

This might be worth a shot: try restoring pstores.exe, psbase.dll, pstorec.dll, and pstorerc.dll from the win98 disc.
Thanks Mntsnow. I have done that a few times before with no luck. I'll try it again. I've heard of other people having this problem on the IE boards @ Computingcentral but nobody has an answer and they don't seem to answer anymore.Been over 9 days since my last posting and still no reply.
Thanks Underclocked, thought you might be onto something, but alas I was letdown. I reinstalled those files and ran sfc. Said previous files were more current than reinstalled ones. Restored all previous files and tried to open OE and got the message MSOE.dll could not be loaded. So I went back to IE setup, ran it and still can't open OE no more MSOE message though.

hey there!
i've run into this issue before a few times and basically there are a couple of things that will cause it to only show the hourglass for a second and then nothing else. one is low system resources, so you may want to try killing TSR's to see if that has any effect. another one is low disk space so if you're running low, that'll do it. other ones .... unfortunately i cannot remember right now and will have to rummage through my notes tomorrow at work. i'll check the thread and see if you're still having the issue. good luck!
Thanks Psyklone. 80% free and 6 gig free. I think I'm ok there.
Thanks for the kb tips! I am not running PGP.
It seems OE5 installs as it shows up on my programs list. When I click it won't open! I tried reinstalling over itself and get the message "the latest version is already installed recommend exiting set up". When I check MS updates site install history also says latest version of IE(5.01) is already installed. IE 5 shows up in my windows update files, I have the new OE icon in the Q/L ( the one with the wraparound arrow). For some reason it just won't open, arghhhh!!! If I remove OE 5 it opens as 4 do I have to uninstall something or what? OE5 used to work before. Thanks guys.

How did you get OE 5.01 before installing IE 5.01? and what ver of IE you got now?
Reason why I ask, I got a test system for experimenting with different things and I was board last night. I had win 98(FE)
with IE 4.0 and OE 4.0, I got 5.0 on a cd, so I upgraded both to 5.0. Then I un-installed OE 5.0, ending up with IE 5.0 and
OE 4.0. I went to windows update and windows download center and could not find OE 5.01,
I guess you need the compleate 5.01 thing, or I'm not looking in the right place.
You must be running win 98(FE) also to have SFC and OE 4.0, but did you upgrade from win 95?
On another system, I upgraded to IE and OE 5.01 and I screwed it up by having an anti-virus prog running at the time. Although explorer did work, I found a bunch of little problems untill I did a repair of IE.
You run an anti-virus too?
Dave
Thanks Dave. I am running 98 1st. ed. from a clean boot, no 95.I have been getting all the updates from "Windows Update" site. Thanks for the tip on anti-virus. I probably was running a/v at time of download. But have uninstalled all d/l'd versions of OE &IE and the versions on CD work fine. IE help shows I am now running IE 5.00.2919.6307. When I go to Windows update says Latest version of IE is already installed. When I run setup from disk or setup file says latest version of IE is already installed. So I do a custom and only install OE and it won't open. Add/remove shows OE5 installed!! I have installed all critical & non critical updates. I'm wondering if it has anything to do with Schannell.dll,Windows Security Update or IE File Location Update? These were installed in Y2K.Previous to these updates, OE 5 worked fine.( had switch identities function) OE help says ver. 4.72.3116.1(cd ver) .But when I install OE that comes with IE5.01 it won't open!!
Hope this helps. Thanks a ton.
Was unable to get on last night or this a.m. Anybody else having this problem? Are the hackers at it again??

Check this out. Describes your problem exactly. It hit me like a brick when I saw the word "Identities".
Cannot Start Outlook Express 5 (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q245/4/19.asp)
Hope that helps http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

And the winner is...... Dave! Thanks a helluva lot Dave. Read your posting and thought not another kb article, but of all the articles I read, I didn't read that one. It seems when you search the kb it is very specific. I think I used the term can't open Outlook Express instead of start and got no hits back. I edited the registry as per instructions. Can I now get rid of the reg back up shortcut on th D/T? One minor problem when importing addresses and messages I got a MAPISP32 in kernel32.dll@015f:bff7b997. What does that mean? Anywho thanks again!!! (I'd give a few smileys. But I don't know how to put them in the message) (Newbie)

Glad it worked Buji. I only found that Kb article referanced through another one I was reading, you would think they would make it easier to find. If OE 5.1 is working, then go ahead and delete the back-up reg entry on the desktop, OE has re-created a new one for you. Sorry, can't help with the MAPI error, hope it was something only with the import and doesn't bother you anymore.
