i'm in the middle of overclocking p3-700e @ 933 on ASUS P3V4X mobo; 256mb SDRAM CAS 2. my question is what's VCore?? right now its set on 1.65v.... its very stable. but I have been noticing ppl having the VCore hight, like 1.75, or even 1.8v. I'm also using Matrox G400MAX. I'm using the Golden Orc cooling fan. its a slot 1.

thanks

VCore is the core voltage of the chip. Your P3 defualts to 1.65v. When overclocking, often the VCore must be raised for stability concerns. The highest VCore I would recommend for a P3 Coppermine is 1.85v, unless you have extremely good cooling.

As the voltage rises, so does the temperature. High temps and high voltage are recommended, unless you literally want to cook your CPU.

thanks for your reply. I have the Golden Orc. I know its a good cooler. So I should try to raise the VCore to or up to 1.85v, until its stable??? having it set on 1.65v, i guess it wouldnt do much, right???

I have a PIII 800E with a Golden Orb cooler. It is the best in my experience. I have tried several. The issue is not how high the voltage is but how high the temp is. The recommended highest voltage is 1.85V but that is if your CPU is less than 50C at 100% utilization. Run your cpu at 100% and check the temp. My Goldne Orb keeps mine at 40C at 100% at 1.85V. I have mine running at 944 (wish mine OCed as much as yours.) I bet you could get 1GHz by bumping up the vcore. Do it and keep us posted. Good luck getting into the GHz club. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Handy thread, saves making a new topic. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif I came for some advice on OC'ing my P3-800e 100FSB Slot1.
If I bump the voltage to 1.75 or even 1.85 will the stock fan & heatsink be adequate? I want to up it to 133FSB and get the chip to 1064 (8 x 133) but I know the vCore needs to go up (can reach only 880 so far).
The fan & heatsink are intel, directly onto the chip in an open cartridge.

Last Q...if the temp gets too high will the system shut-down automatically before damage is done? I'm on a P3V4X mobo (Asus).

Cheers guys. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

thanks for ppl feedback to my question.

This is my first thing doing this.. I have no idea what I am doing. actually thanks to all you nice ppl helping me out. thanks. anyway, at first i set the Vcore to 1.85v. setting the processor to 933mhz. it was fine booting into win98SE at first. less than 5 minute, it freeze. now its set on 1.75v. I downloaded a hardware sensors monitor. it states.. CPU Temp 25-30C. the Core is at 1.78v. this is not running anything. I also downloaded 3DMark2000 (Free). It told me that my Processor is at 950. WOW!!! I havent actually tested with my photoshop yet. stillhavent install it yet. But as I am writing this... I am running my DVD in the background. running AIM. and the temp mostly still in the 33C.. but I just saw jump to 50, and back to 40s and down to 32C. the Core goes up and down before 1.76v and 1.79v, but mostly at 1.78v. is this ok???
