Ya know, like shortcuts to web pages and stuff that you'd like to keep handy for the next week or two (but you don't wanna commit them to your bookmarks file or favorites folder). I use to just drag them to the desktop and store 'em there. But at you can see, this method is getting rather messy for me as of late:
(here's a pic of my current messy desktop)

Anyone else have this issue? What do you do?

I have in my favorites folder, several other subfolders, here is an example

computer
(-community
-reviews
-tweak OC
-purchase
-downloads
-cracks/tools
-gaming)
and under just computer I put my temporary/quasi permanent links, and they get sorted in time

Under just favorites I keep all new temporary
links and link that will be placed or deleted soon
I have several other folders and subfolders according to interest/category
I have over 250 favorites

in parenthases are the cascading subfolders in the computer folder.

Hey OuTpaTienT,what is the bar on the side of your desktop? It seems very functional,I may need something like that, let me know what it is please.

Actually, I DO have a bookmark file called temp. I put those links in there and later, either I put them in the proper folder or get rid of them. I do the same with e-mails, If I'm busy, I toss the less urgent ones in another temp folder, and go thru them later. That way I can easily see the new ones as they come in. Have a temp folder for documents too. One of my weekly chores is going thru these temp folders, putting everything away where they belong, and dumping the rest.

oblivion, that's just a few Windoze "toolbars" for easy access to commonly used shortcuts.

If you're not familiar with Windoze's toolbars, then just take note of the standard (just installed) Windoze desktop...on the Taskbar is an area where Windoze puts it's "quick links"...that area is a Toolbar. You can alter that one or just make a number of your own toolbars.

If you grab that toolbar and drag it off the Taskbar, you'll find that it'll "stick" to any of the four edges.

I like the single click operation it gives to the shortcuts. I like the fact that I can visually see my most handy apps without having to wade through the Start menu. And I like the way I can have it use the small, 1/4 sized, icons to save on screen real estate.

If you want assistance on exactly how I set'em up, then just hollar. Otherwise just fool around with that default "quick links" area and you'll figure it out. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

Well cool,I did it,it was pretty easy really

...learn something new often with winbloze...
now for the clencher question

How do you get your quick links back on the left side(of the original toolbar) to where they default from?
I can only get them to appear on the right side now,it has happened to me before....and geez is it ever annoying.

If you use (file) Explorer to find the directory (folder) named "Quick Launch" you quickly realize what's going on. The Quick Launch toolbar is in reality just a directory that contains those shortcuts.

So, to make your own, just add your own directories (wherever you want to put them) then right-click on the Taskbar, choose Toolbars/New_Toolbar and then locate the directories you just made. Easy huh?

Why dont you just create a folder on the desktop and drop the shortcuts in there ?

OuTpaTienT,oblivion
Cascading -
Make a folder-with subfolder(s) and put your shortcuts in subfolders - point to that folder when createing a new Toolbar, hold down Ctrl key when you left click folder and it will cascade from the toolbar.

Wow. So it can be done. Pretty simple. That's one thing I will give Windoze/MS credit for, always cool little tricks up their sleeve for you to find. (hmmm, or do we have to find them because of incomplete documentation. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif)

Anyhow, thanks GG.
