I have a gateway(No I will NOT ever do that again!!!) P200 (No MMX) and am desperately needing to upgrade the processor. There's no way I can afford to upgrade the whole thing so I was wondering if in general I'd be able to possibly upgrade to a Celeron300a by chance?
I understand they use a 66Mhz bus so I'm assuming my li'l P200 would also have a 66Mhz bus on the MB.
(It has SDRAM so it's not THAT old!! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Not possible to go to a Celeron with that.
You'll have to stick with a socket seven processor, which ones depend on the board's available settings.
You may have few choices, since the pre-mmx cpu's were single voltage.
See if you can find out what settings are available for voltage, FSB, and multipliers.

<edit> If you do manage to upgrade it, I'm interested in your P200 cpu for an --ahhh-- "experiment" http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I would say you are out of luck on that one..cels are slot1 or ppga and not compatible with your board...

How would I find out the multiplier info? I'm assuming GW2k won't just give it to me!

I'm assuming some info will be in my POS instructions they gave me(can you tell I hate GW2k yet? haha)

Thanks for the info!
Hopefully I'll at least be able to at least overclock it! lol

Yep, look if you can overclock the beast(cheapest solution), but also check out Powerleap: http://www.powerleap.com

Thay're a reputable copmany selling combos of CPUs(primarily AMDs) with socket 7 adapters. Something similar to what you're looking for.

Wow that'd be Great!!
BUT are they BS'ing me when they say that it adds MMX and 3DNow! ?

I just hate to spend the money and end up hating the decision!
Also in your personal opinion would you work with the AMD and get the 400, or just go for the Overdrive? (It seemed the Overdrive had better cooling from what I could see)

Thanks for the info!! =8^)

Dude...For $279 you could buy an Abit BF6 (115 including shipping) and a REAL Celeron (366 for ocing to 550 $60) and have a faster system. Those chips always seem to be much slower than they claim. I would highly suggest saving a few bucks and getting the real deal.

As for finding out the multiplier settings onthe mobo, just ask them which mobo they used (or see if you can ID it) and then look the specs up on the mobo manufacturer website. You don't have to ask them how to overclock it. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I actually have to agree with Dave on that. I myself was shopping around for an upgrade, but ended up building my own system. It was more expensive, but the system flies. System performance is a combination of a number of factors, and CPU is just one. You won't notice much difference unless you jump to 400 MGH at least. And 100 FSB of newer boards sure helps a lot. Overall, if you can spend $300-400, you'll get a much faster new system.

Another option is the Evergreen upgrade, which may help in places the Powerleap will not. (by including a possible bios upgrade) www.evertech.com (http://www.evertech.com) Building a new system gives you a lot of options though, but it is more of a challenge.

The Powerleap adapter looks like a good solution. You could get their adapter for $49.95 & get a K6/2 elsewhere cheaper...

As to the settings, Gateway actually has some of their's listed here (http://www.gateway2000.com/support/techdocs/index.shtml).

Another word of advice. That P200 chip is worth bucks because of its rarity. Selling it might give you a nice head start on your next computer.

Intel/Gateway's pages suck! haha
Well I looked at gateway they say I have a Intel 586 PCI MB so I looked at Intel's site... couldn't find anything that related to MB on their mobo support page.. so I looked through the BIOS Lookup, didn't find my BIOS Suffix!!
So I looked at AMI's page (AMI Bios) and nothing there either... I looked in the tech manual for my mobo it says it can be clocked up to 200 (which it already is of course) but doesn't say anything about going higher than that. GW2k says the part no. is TE430VX nothing on Intel's page! Is there a site I can do a search for that mobo to find more about it?

I tried the dummy options www.motherboards.com (http://www.motherboards.com) or motherboard.com and well no help http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Thanks again!

Geez, make me feel stupid!!

Thanks though!

Although it states again, that I can only go up to 200!!!
Would an old puter like that be able to be overclocked by the BIOS?
I'm assuming not, but worth a try to ask!
