I finally broke down and bought a new printer, HP970cse, same specs as the 1000 just dont have the option of printing from a memory card, Printer is excellent, outstanding results.
I have been using HP and Kodak paper with NO problems.

I thought I`d get smart and ordered some High Quality paper off ebay, 250 sheets for only 29.99 opened it up, looked great, felt great, man I was happy, until I printed my first picture. it is pure ****, takes forever to dry, wont print no where near as clear as the others. actually I dont think it`s photo paper, because the tag has been removed off the pack and I talked to a few others that bought the same paper and their tag was removed also. It probably wasn't photo paper because of the fact that it had to "dry". If you try to print in high quality mode on regular paper, you'll dump a bunch of ink on it and it will smear, stay wet for a long time, etc. Could you tell if one side was particularly white, or shiny?

250 sheets for $29.99 ????? waow, that's cheap !
At that price, that can not be photo paper !

I have the HP895Cxi and I use HP Premium Photo Paper to print out the photos taken with my digital camera.
It costs me £9.99 (approx $16) for 10 sheets !!!

It looks just like photo paper, just by looking at it, the only difference I can tell between HP and this one is that it isnt quite as white.
the thing that gets me is that I emailed a few people that bought the same paper, and some say it is great and some say it`s ****.

also, everyone says that their label was torn off too. the paper is in a wraper that has Crown Vantage on it. I went to their site and found that they do make paper, but I didnt see photo paper.

I guess it could be worse, I just got an email from a guy that bought 500 sheets,He`s highly irregular to put it mildly, but I learned a good lesson. I guess I can always print on the back side! lol

Have a good look at the paper. I have bought some paper like this (i think). bend a sheet almost in half and see if one side isn't quite a bit whiter than the other. Print on the bright white side. My guess is that this paper was made by Epson, they make a pretty cheap Photo paper but it is not very heavy, it is good at 720 DPI give it a shot
