I've read multiple posts about the K6-2 processor remapping the 2x multiplier to 6x. I have an old socket 7 mobo (Shuttle HOT-557 (http://www.spacewalker.com/english/faq_e/557.htm) ) with FSB up to 83 available. If I understand correctly, at 6x this would allow 500MHz.

I have 2 questions:
1) I think I have V1.32, which shows in the link above that AMD K6 is not supported. The difference shown on the page is "linear type voltage regulator" vs. "K6 compatible (switch type voltage regulator)." Does anyone know if the K6-2 also requires the switch type? Can I use a K6-2?
2) If I got a K6-2 500 or 550 CPU, what would the voltage need to be set at?

Thanks for any help and advice http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

I would say that that mainboard doesn't support MMX,but an Intel MMX 166 does work.Hmmmm...But it is very likely that if a K6 doesn't work,a K6-2 doesn't work either.I give you about 1% change that it works. Not much,is it?btw,I think that the lowest voltage setting is 3.2V.I think that's the problem.

sorry to say this but it will not work the only chip from amd that board supports is the K5 you can boot it up with a k6 or k6-2
but forget ever seeing windows load right.

oh and just so you know I have one of those boards sittong over on my work bench right now and yes I tryed putting a K6-266 in it
it booted should the chip as a 80486Dx2 66mhz

ran a dos prog that should it running at 200 mhz but I could never get it into windows at all

Thanks for your replies. After looking at RADARs link, I believe that there probably isn't an 83MHz setting after all. I do have another Shuttle board at home that might though. It's a Shuttle HOT-555 (http://www.spacewalker.com/english/faq_e/555.htm) . I'll have to check which version it is, but I think it's one of the 555A versions.

I just found the voltage requirements for the K6-2:
<u>Processor Core I/O</u>
AMD-K6-2 550MHz 2.3V 3.3V
AMD-K6-2 533MHz 2.2V 3.3V
AMD-K6-2 500MHz 2.2V 3.3V
AMD-K6-2 475MHz 2.4V 3.3V
AMD-K6-2 450MHz 2.4V 3.3V

Do you think the HOT-555A would work for a K6-2 500MHz?

Thanks again,

Steve

Ronald, I don't think you are correct. Follow this link http://www.spacewalker.com/english/faq_e/557_2.htm#hd001 . If you scroll down it has dual voltage settings for the v1.32 board listing 2.5v as the lowest which is within parameters of a 2.2v or 2.4v AMD K6-2. I would not go with a K6-3 becuase it is really power hunger and many older boards will not fully power it, but the K6-2 should be ok. I would personally buy a K6-2 450 because if you are going to be overvolting it anyways, you might as well overclock it to 500 MHz. Looking at the diagram I am not sure you really have a 83 MHz setting. 75 MHz *6 = 450 MHz may be as high as you can get anyhow. Let us know how it goes.

Since the multiplying is, and has ever been, done by the processor itself, the 2x=6x remap will work on any board.

For K6-2, a mainboard must have:

* 2.2V CPU support (2.3V for K6-2/550)

* voltage regulators capable of feeding at least 10 Ampères, better 14.

* BIOS that knows what a K6-2 is.

66 MHz boards take you up to 400 MHz, 75 MHz ones to 450, and 83 MHz ones to 500. So far so good.

Back to yours. Linear voltage regulators? These max out at somewhere between 5 and 8 Ampères, that alone makes me say FORGET IT. That's why the specs say it doesn't even support the original K6, not enough power available.

Then you don't even have anything near 2.2V, and given how old that board is _and_ the K6-nogo situation, I bet the BIOS has no idea of AMD K6 family processors at all (why should it).

And besides, forget about using 83 MHz bus when you have an Intel chipset there.

Thanks for the input Peter. I found out that the 555A does support AMD K6, but not the K6-2. I finally found a link at Shuttle's site that told me exactly what I was looking for:
Which Mainboards are compatible with AMD K6-2 and AMD K6-III (http://www.spacewalker.com/english/faq_e/amdk6_2.htm#hd002)
At least by posting I learned a few things about why the processor isn't supported though.

Thanks again,

Steve
