Your board has to be equipped with a sensor...and you should be able to determine that in the setup. If you have sandra sisoft it should tell you if you have the sensor enabled http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

If you are using win98, and your mobo has a sensor like Vincent said, the I suggest using Winsystem 98. It tells you temps, cpu usage, net stats, ram usage, and a whole lat more. You can download it from www.gesc.ttu.edu/pub (http://www.gesc.ttu.edu/pub)

I tried what you said but WINSYSTEM98 tells me there is no 'chipset', and it only gives me a prinout of RAM used.
a) Have I been conned ? why don't I have this chipset thing ?
b) How do I make sure in future when buying a board that it's on it ???? What do I ask for to make sure ??

Your advice would be helpful..

The circuitry is optional on some mobos. The key phrase is Hardware Monitoring. I just bought a ZX chipset mobo for my parents and it was optional on the board. Doesn't matter since they will not do any o/cing.

Thanks for clearing that up Banti !

One last thing though, are these 'hardware monitoring' chipsets standard on most boards ? If they're not and I need to purchase one to add to the mobo, what should I be buying and where does it fit on ?

They aren't exactly standard but they come on many boards. They are called winbond or LM chips. As for buying one, the only people you may be able to contact about that are the Abit people. I doubt any retailer is going to have anything like that. Putting in in may require soldering. There are other methods though. My soyo didn't have a winbond chip and I went to Radio Shack (per recommendation by Ed_S) and bought an indoor outdoor temp sensor that I place in the fins of the HS. It is a subjective temp rating but you can at least compare temps to non-oc'ed temps. Be aware that temps do change substantially with room temp changes.
Good luck-
