Me will not get Win 2000, Linux is looking too appealing now. Win2000 is another memory hog.... jad1097 02-15-2000, 10:31 PM Sorry but not true. Windows 2000 happens to be very efficent with memory. chipbgt 02-15-2000, 10:32 PM I am running win2000 only cause I got a free copy. I think once I can purge my sytem of win98, I will add either mandrake or red hat. I currently have enough memory for win2000 so thats not a big problem. win2k isnt perfect, but it makes 98 look reeealy slow on my system. narayan 02-15-2000, 10:38 PM Win2000 not a memhog? Well, I guess that's good to hear. I stand corrected, but probably will try Linux. chipbgt 02-15-2000, 10:47 PM its not if you have over 128 http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif are we the only three people up? jad1097 02-15-2000, 10:50 PM I think so. I am running win2000 with 96MB ram and have not had a problem. when I check the memory with task manager I have seen the usage as high as 80 or 90 MB's. happyhamster 02-15-2000, 11:10 PM I really-really was going to switch my primary machine to linux. And there was definitely no way I'd pay ~$200 for the next billy's work of art. But I saw info about MS contest for free w2k, filled out application... and won. So I virtually HAD to give it a try. Well, actually I was already running RC2, so I knew what I was jumping into. So far it runs pretty smoothly on my dual celeron, and definitely requires less tweaking than linux... which is good or bad depending on the situation. It's pretty stable, I got only 2 BSODs, both related to driver problems. About 95% of my apps run on it, even games like Age of Kings. OTOH linux is far from perfect, despite all the hype. I seriously tried 4 distros(Redhat, Caldera, Mandrake, Corel), and neither won my heart. But your mileage may vary. If you don't need exotic apps and games, and do only basic stuff like word processing and internet, you may want to take a look at BeOS( http://www.be.com ). It's a nice modern OS, which IMO doesn't get a wider acceptance primarily because everybody has already invested so much time/money/effort in windows. They were commercial, but decided to give their next release, due in March, for free. Look if your hardware is supported and give it a try. I think that OS is like car, you should be able to afford it and you should like it. Try yourself. I agree with jad that in many cases, usually if you have 96+ Mb of RAM, w2k runs as fast as, if not faster, than win98. Amazing but true. just my $0.01 Mntsnow 02-15-2000, 11:13 PM Ohhh Your not the only one's awake at this time of night http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif I'm here still at work http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif. But I do like the OT http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif. I LOVE my bp6 on win2K! It is just rockin! its been up over 3 weeks now without a single reboot and thats with me installing and uninstalling several programs that I knew even before hand would not work on it and let them(the individual program) crash WITHOUT bringing win2K to its knees http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif After I'm all thru "trashing" the install I will wipe it and load only the programs that I know will work and use on that system and I bet it will run forever http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif btw I have 128megs in that system and have used only 82 megs max so far in testing! and that was with 4 browser windows(ie5) and 2 photoshops (5.5) running and winamp (2.5e) (of course) and burning a cd in the background on EZ-CD (4.01) I also have Mandrake 7.0 running on a different system and like it....BUT It really doesnt have the Hardware support OR the App support yet to make me change yet. Maybe in another couple of years???? Mntsnow jad1097 02-15-2000, 11:15 PM It smokes win98. I am also running BEOS 4.5 but it does not support my NIC http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif so no internet for me. No sound either http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif Ice22 02-16-2000, 06:01 AM Currently my AMD 350 system with 64MB RAM is tri-booting. I got Win98, Win2000 Pro, and Red Hat Linux 6.1, the only one I don't like is Win98, but I gotta have it if I want to play any games. Win2000 is great, on only 64MB of RAM there are hangups or anything. I'm getting Mandrake Linux 7.0, so I'll soon find out what it's like as well. I'd say go with Win2000 Pro if you're willing to lose compatibility with a couple of games. Apostle 83 02-16-2000, 06:51 AM I have designed my own os! I Call it L.O.S.E.R.-Light Operating System for Enraged Racoons. It is quite efficient, with very few fatal resolve crossin...errors. NavyDood_ F/A18_Mech 02-16-2000, 10:41 AM I'm waiting for Windows ME (millenium). http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif Jim RobRich 02-16-2000, 11:45 AM Sad to say it, but looks like Win2k will be my next OS. On the good side of it, though, I can finally ditch win9x and its outdated coding. For my secondary OS, looks like I'll be switching to BeOS when they release their next version, which will be free for non-commercial uses (same as retail, but lacks some utilities, but these can be easily replaced with thrid party freeware apps). Other than these two new additions, I'l still keep Linux Slackware and OS/2 Warp installed. I like to just play around with Linux, and I like OS/2 Warp because it is extremely stable with good fault tolerance. Vincent22 02-16-2000, 01:53 PM I am currently seeking more speed as we all are and have been considering Win2k professional full install. I work a lot with digital images and printing from photoshop and other image software, all current applications. I am running 98 and just updated to a 600P3 from a 400 p2. Supermicro P6SBU scsi2 w/LVD mobo, Quantum Viking 2 HHD, Viper 770,some USB devices, scsi pcmcia card readers, 384 MB siemans pc 100sdram, could go to 512MB. I know the printers I use are compatable. Is there anything in this list that looks like a potential problem? Also will the new non dos memory management of win2k accelerate this configuration in regard to spooling times? I wanna play with it anyway but would like to know in advance any potentioal problems or benefits to look for. Thanks in advance sincerely Vincent jad1097 02-16-2000, 02:54 PM "Before you purchase Windows 2000, download and run the Windows 2000 Readiness Analyzer on your PC to get a report of known hardware and software compatibility issues, based on Microsoft testing." Get it here. After all the time I've spent learning Win 98 and getting it to work 99 and 44/100 crash free on my computer, I'm not gonna change horses in mid-streem. I mean all the stuff I have installed works! Can someone tell me why an upgrade would do me any good??? Does this make sense??? It seems when an upgrade comes along , alot of folks just have to have. I drive a 1972 El Camino, Why change to a easily torn up newer ride. If it ain't broke don't fix it. Any comments welcomed http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif jad1097 02-16-2000, 05:07 PM Pickle, This is from PCCOMPUTING maginze pg154 the March issue. "Your running Windows98 on relatively new hardware, and your computer crashes too often. YOur a prime candidate. Check with the makers of the programs you use regularly ( their websites are a good place to start) to make sure they're compatible with Windows 2000. If they are, go with an upgrade and say goodbye to frequent system chrashes and forced rebooots." BBA 02-16-2000, 08:20 PM I put W2K server and Proff on a experiment box at work...P200MMX w/64M ram...it works very well...and is faster than NT4 all the way around and is comparable to Win95 for speed, but has the NT5 features to boot... yammahoppy 02-16-2000, 08:42 PM if the hardware compatibility test is any indication i am not gonna upgrade to win2k. half of my machine wont work. hope they fix that w/ the first service pak. i think i will keep what i got. jad1097 02-16-2000, 08:45 PM The test only gives you an idea of possible issues. You could find drivers for most of the hardware, I think. At least I have been able to find them to resolve it. alpha 02-17-2000, 12:13 AM If an OS is like a car, then I've been doing a lot of joy riding... Vincent22 02-17-2000, 03:58 AM I have used win95,98 and NT, I have lusted for an OS like NT with USB compatability and plug and pray as well. NT, when I used it was for speed and stability...it didn't dissapoint in that regard. Now here comes Billy Boy with the win2k addressing everything I wanted? Phew that's wierd!!This is so odd I don't know what else to do except get it. I am running 98 now and understand that the Win2K upgrade is the cheapest option but 2K isn't DOS based like 98 and I fear a ton of glitches going that way. Going for the full install instead. Is this a reasonable approach? Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks in advance sincerely Vincent jad1097 02-17-2000, 04:10 AM A clean install is the way to go. gene1938 02-17-2000, 10:05 AM Just finished NT, for new dual cpu set-up:~) gene SysOpt.com
