i think it is running a little hot. i have asus probe, which came with my a7v m/b, installed. at stock settings(650mhz, 1.54 vcore) the cpu temp was a average of 104*F.
i set the multiplier to 100x9 and set the voltage jumpers to the next to highest setting(supposedly 1.8, but asus probe says it is 1.88) temp is now 113*f. is this to hot?it is well below the treshold level for my cpu set by asus probe(almost by half)
for cooling i have a duron h/s with a 24cfm fan. the way the heat sink is sitting i was able to mount a smaller fan on the side that faces towards top of case(top is off). i have a larger fan mounted so it blows out of the top of the case, as well as an even larger fan sucking air through the bottom of the case. i'd like some links to super cooler fans if anyone has some..thanks

That is not too hot. It's not exactly cool, but it's not too shabby.
1st, is that temp (113°F/45°C) at idle or full load? If that's an idle temp, then it'll probably near 120°F at full load (which is still acceptable but starting to get too warm for my personal taste.)
According to the AMD docs on their Socket-A CPUs, the max core temp that can be tolerated is 90°C (yes, that's 194°F!) But that's an absolute MAX. In reality you don't ever want to get near that.
If you can keep it under 120°-125°F during 100% CPU load, then I think you'll be fine.
My Athlon Classic (slot-A) 900mhz overclocked to 1000mhz has an idle temp of about 100°-105°F. And a full load temp of 108°-116°F. And more importantly, ...rock stable.
FYI, the specs sheet on my CPU have a max temp of 70°C/158°F

My Duron 650 @ 800 locks up when It goes above 49C. It is running 43C at 800MHz, but when I was at 850, it locked up. I am gonna try again tomorrow.......

thanks outpatient. i was just used to my k6-2 450@500. with stock cooling and rain it ran at around 90*f.
after running cpu hogging benchmarks and looking at asus probe, the highest the cpu temp has been has been 119*f. i would still like to get a good super h/s fan. i hear the golden orb isn't good for duron chips, so i'll look around and see what i can find.

your temps are just right, don't worry.
Duron is very sensitive with heat though.
Mine would not overclock any higher that 750 (stock 650) at any voltage with the retention hook of the HS put the wrong way (facing the PS raiser of the A7V). Turned it the other way, 850 stable! then I found out Alpha recomends the fan to suck air from the HS rather than blow, turned the fan around, 1050 stable but at 1.85V(BIOS says 1.96) but thought it was too high a voltage and went to 1G @ 1.8V
I believe all Durons can do the Giga dance but it takes some fiddling around with these details, so keep up.

So just turning around the heatsink gets ya highe? hmmmmmmmmmm
I will try that later today http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Not the HS itself, the retention hook.
The HS has a gap on one side for the head of the socket to fit, so there is only one way you can put it (correctly).
The hook however can either face the raier card or the memory. This is an Alpha HS and the hook can be turned around idependently of the HS. Putting the hook facing the mem balanced the HS better and made a better contact between the HS and CPU hence better o'cing.
If you haven't got an Alpha, make sure the HS is correctly placed on the CPU and that the hook is putting pressure to the right points to maximize contact.
Good luck

Oh, so its just with an Alpha? Ok. I am using a POS Coolmaster HS......
I am getting an Alpha on Sept 16.......

hey otheos.... i used your suggestion about turning the heat sink fan the other way...worked like a charm, it knocked 5 degrees off of my duron http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

OUTPATient
how do you check your temp at full load.
My temp check is in the bios the best I can do is work it for awhile then run to the bios.
Is there a better way

erm, why don't you use the software that came with the mobo for monitoring the hardware?
what mobo you got and what OS?

Either use the hardware monitoring software that came with the motherboard (it's kinda ugly, but works.) Or download any of the numurous hardware monitoring applications availible. I use this one:
http://web.bham.ac.uk/jst829/mbprobe/
And for running at full load, I've yet to find anything that make my CPU hotter than just running RC5. Even 3d games run the CPU much cooler than RC5.
